Still, I must

The last time I saw Kushida-san was last weekend at the special exam.

For the next week, I did not see her once, upto Friday after school.

That wasn’t all. Neither Wang-san nor Hasebe-san were attending school.

Five days from Monday to Friday. It’s already been five days.

Nothing was going to wait. Time continued to pass us by.

Careful meetings and preliminary research for the athletic festival. Student council work. Ordinary studies. Sometimes, as I continue to face the rushing waves head-on, my knees tremble and I feel like falling backwards.

But I can’t let myself fall here and now.

I’m not showing any results even though I’ve declared that I would absolutely make it up to them. I have no right to lament.

I tried several times to contact Ayanokouji-kun, but I stopped myself.

If I ask for help, there is a chance he will respond.

There is also a chance that he’d lead us to the answer we want.

But at the very least, this time I should try to solve things with my own power.

“That concludes homeroom.”

When Chabashira-sensei finished her last homeroom of the day and left the room, I quickly followed her.

“Sensei, may I have a word with you?”

“I don’t mind, but… okay. Let’s talk while walking.”

The hallways are conspicuous because many students leave their seats to use the restroom at this time.

Perhaps taking my intentions into account, Chabashira-sensei decided to talk while we walked around.

“It’s been five days since Kushida-san, Wang-san, and Hasebe-san last came to school.”

“Yeah. We’ve received word that the former two keep calling in sick, but they haven’t shown their faces at the clinic for an examination. As for Hasebe, she just keeps saying that she’s taking the day off and hasn’t given us any details.”

Definitely not the best way to take a day off.

Their delinquent refusal to attend school felt like a punishment for me.

“Are they about to get severe penalties?”

I know she won’t be able to give me a specific answer, but I tried asking once.

“No need to worry. Especially for honor students like Wang and Kushida, the rules are designed to give them slack. As for Hasebe, she is not a problem child, so it is not such a big deal yet. It would have been different, of course, if this was someone who had no achievements or was known for bad behavior.”

“Thanks to how they usually act – is that how it is?”

“That’s right. Besides, there are lively students who skip a week of classes just fine and there are also students who get themselves hurt emotionally and shut themselves in. It is difficult to tell the difference. If that’s the case, the only way to judge them is to look at their attitude and performance in school so far.”

I felt my heart lighten just from her telling me that.

“And schools are not demons. We don’t think of it as appropriate to bludgeon the children’s minds by forcing them to go to school. Anyway, the three students who are absent right now have not been tardy and have been diligent in class. They deserve a reprieve.”

Chabashira-sensei tells me softly.

She seemed to be a different person from usual, so much so that I wondered if there was something behind it.

It may have been true that, just as the gossip with my classmates went, the special examination was an opportunity for her to change.

“Above all, they understand that the school also administers rigorous special exams.”

It’s not unusual for them to need rest, so it’s forgiven for now…..

After confirming that there was no one around, Chabashira-sensei stopped for a moment.

“But the time limit is near. If the absences continue up to next week, the 100 points you earned so desperately will dwindle away mercilessly.”

Do something about it during this weekend, the teacher implied.

But could I really answer to that?

I only intended to hear about the current state of affairs, but my weakness appeared on my face little by little.

“Thank you very much. That was very helpful.”

“Wait Horikita. Don’t you still have something to say?”

“…No. I shouldn’t bother you any more than this.”

“You won’t know if you’re bothering me unless you ask. I still have a little time. Won’t it be a little easier if you just talked to someone?”

My shallow mental state was seen through by Chabashira-sensei.

It would be a lie to say that I didn’t hesitate, but I decided to be brave here.

“We got class points by expelling Sakura-san. Was that the right choice?”

“Do you regret your decision?”

“I thought I made the right decision at the time. But…… to be honest, I’m second guessing right now.”

“I wish I could show you the answer, but there’s nothing I can do.”

“I understand. As a teacher, you can’t answer that question, can you?”

“That’s not the case. I just can’t prove that you were right at this point in time. Some students may have seen your decision as somewhat dictatorial and self-serving. As a result, you are suffering from the judgment of others, and beginning to feel as if your answer was wrong.”

What a painful thing to hear. I can’t even deny her.

“But does it really matter that much? To begin with, no human being is perfect. We make simple addition and multiplication mistakes, learn, and then move on. Even I am walking through a life full of mistakes.”

“You too…… Sensei?”

“That’s how it was even when I took the same special exam. I couldn’t even answer the questions in time. You gave an answer. You did well. No one can get a hundred points without experience. You were recognized and empowered as a leader at the time of that special test. And you were prepared to cut someone off to protect Kushida. The time to acknowledge that you were right to do so starts here and now.”

Sensei says something very teacher-like.

I was a little puzzled, as such a thing had never really happened before.

“You don’t have to try to score a hundred at this stage; you can either cut the OAA bottom line reasonably, or you can prioritize your commitments and accept the inconvenience. So you have two choices.”

“That’s… right……”

I know. I know, and yet I still feel lost.

“But…I also think that I may have lost sight of my surroundings. I think that if I had listened more, I might have been able to get a better grasp of the right answer.”

“There are times when you can’t see what’s around you. And there are times when the heat catches up with you and you doubt whether or not you made the right choice.”

But I had no such experience. I was so frustrated that I unconsciously made a clenched fist.

“To put it gently, you’ve been taking the easy way out until now. To put it roughly, your decisions have been two-dimensional until now. Don’t you think so? Of course, that’s normal. It’s just that for the first time the peculiarities of this school have brought us to seek new alternatives.”

“Yes……”

Powerful advice, and yet I still can’t find the right answer. I must have been looking pitiful, but Chabashira-sensei treated me softly and patiently.

“You fought within the rules presented to you by the school, didn’t you?”

“But I broke my promise not to drop anyone out except the traitor.”

“Did you decide to protect Kushida from the beginning, lie and make that promise to get that vote in favor?”

“No! I was really prepared for that at that time… It’s true.”

“Then there is nothing wrong with that. It is important to keep one’s word. However, even adults sometimes make mistakes in their promises. I know you changed your mind when you realized that keeping Kushida was the right thing to do. You are free to disregard or ignore those who make fun of you now. Some will follow you, some won’t, and bringing a class of nearly 40 together is not something that even Ryuuen, Sakayanagi or Ichinose can do so easily. The other students may be yes-men on the surface, but you never know what they are thinking on the inside.”

Chabashira-sensei then placed her hand gently on my shoulder.

“Don’t be afraid to fail. I don’t want to be an adult who can’t accept and forgive a child’s failure.”

“Sensei, I haven’t failed yet.”

“……That’s right. I just meant that I intend to see the choices you make through to the end.”

After giving me a slightly troubled look, she looks me in the eye again.

Her polite, stern, but loving words almost make me choke a little.

“You’ve changed, haven’t you, Chabashira-sensei.”

I didn’t mean to say it out loud, but I did. Because that’s how I truly felt.

“Is it strange that after always giving you the cold shoulder, I would start trying to act like a teacher?”

“I’m a little surprised, but it’s not strange.”

“Oh, well that’s good.”

Perhaps thinking she had said too much, Chabashira-sensei coughed and changed the subject.

“As for Ayanokouji or Kushida, what’s the situation?”

“About Ayanokouji-kun, you say?…… Nothing much really. If I had to say, I think he’s observing what I do.”

“I see. He thinks it’s something you should solve, doesn’t he?”

“Maybe he just can’t keep up with my selfishness.”

“I wonder. But he’d made up his mind in Kushida’s case. If you weren’t someone he trusted, I don’t think he would’ve let you be.”

“You sure have a lot of favor towards Ayanokouji-kun, don’t you? I remember you saying that Ayanokouji-kun was the most defective product.”

“That was a very old statement.”

“He’s even better than the OAA states.”

“Your trust and approval of him has risen considerably too.”

“He has some personality difficulties, but that’s not limited to him so…… what did you mean by that? Or were you mistaken, Sensei?”

He is undeniably excellent, and he is more calm and collected than I am.

I don’t feel like he is a defective product.

“You don’t need to take every single thing the teacher says seriously. He’s spent far more time with you than with someone like me, hasn’t he?”

“I’d still like to hear about it.”

“…….Right. My assessment has not changed since before. No, I believe the credibility of that assessment has increased.”

He is defective. The validity of those words hadn’t changed.

“But it is too early to dwell on that now. There are other problems you need to solve as soon as possible.”

“That’s – right.”

It is true that I am curious about it, but surely that can wait. Kushida-san, Wang-san, and Hasebe-san must be brought back to school.

“Is Kushida tough to handle?”

“So far it’s been a waste of effort. No matter how many times I visit her, no matter how long I wait, she won’t open the gate.”

“That’s rough.”

Aside from the weekend, on ordinary days she can usually buy as many things as she wants to in a convenience store while we’re at school.

It’s pointless to try to starve her.

When I tried to contact her on my cell phone, there was no battery.

“She must be happy to feel me running in circles on the other side of her door.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that either. But if you don’t make a move, things won’t progress. They’ll only get worse.”

“Yes…….”

“If you can’t do something on your own, you can always ask for help from another.”

“But the only classmate who would be willing to help persuade Kushida-san is…… Hirata-kun. Even he probably doesn’t have time for that right now.”

He’s backed up by Wang-san, Shinohara-san and their followers.

“Indeed, Hirata would be… but I’m not sure it would be enough for Kushida. He’s a good person with a good head on his shoulders. I don’t think the door will open if you bring such a person in front of it.”

“I think I somehow understand what you’re trying to say. Because she’s dishonest.”

“I’m afraid I can’t think of anyone suitable at the moment, but it might not be a bad idea to look outside of your classmates.”

“But to try to persuade Kushida-san means to confront her with her true feelings. It would be a considerable disadvantage to tell that to an outsider.”

“I suppose we’ll need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages. But it’s not necessarily forbidden. For example, some of us teachers know about Kushida’s past, and there are tight-lipped teachers even aside from us. I don’t really think there’s such a thing as a secret.”

Someone who can move Kushida-san’s heart…

No, even if it’s not moving her heart, if there were somebody who could bring some sort of breakthrough…

“It’s almost time. Let me say one last thing, though it may be meddlesome. The most important thing is what you want to do, Horikita. Think about that carefully.”

What I want to do with Kushida-san… huh.

“Thank you very much, Sensei. Thanks to you, I’ve hardened my resolve.”

I still don’t have an answer, but I feel more motivated to struggle.

“Don’t worry about it. As a teacher, I’m sure this much is natural.”

After saying that, Chabashira-sensei went back to the staff room.

I continued to watch her from the stairs until I could no longer see her back.

Unavoidable Path – part 2

Sure enough, the three absences didn’t change the next day.

Of course, the chaotic classroom still hasn’t shown any signs of settling down.

For a solution to happen, the three must fundamentally return to school first.

“Yo. Wanna go to the toilet together?”

As I tinkered with my phone on my desk while waiting for the next class, Sudou called to me.

A rare invitation. He said toilet, but his expression was serious.

Beyond the front of wanting to ask for a favor, he had a goal.

Like Kei and Yousuke, he wanted to consult with me and do something.

“Yeah. Okay.”

Since I didn’t have any reason to refuse, I stood from my seat. We went out of the classroom and into the toilet without attracting any attention.

At times like this, I am always saved by the convenience of my seat.

But a student followed us right away.

“Sudou-kun. I want to speak with you. Is that okay?”

She seemed to have been waiting for us to enter the hallways as she had something to do with Sudou.

“What is it, Onodera?”

Onodera noticed me standing beside him and dodged the question.

“Ah-… you’re with Ayanokouji-kun. Okay, I was talking about something.”

At another glance, it seemed that having me here was inconvenient for her.

But since Sudou was the one who invited me in our break time I had no choice.

“We’re going to the toilet. Are you in a hurry?”

“Um, I wonder.”

It seemed that she didn’t want me to hear. She was hesitating a little bit.

“Can I wait here? I want to tell you as soon as possible.”

Onodera judged that if we were just going to the toilet then we would return right away.

But hearing that, Sudou seemed uncomfortable.

After all, if he had something to consult me about, it probably wouldn’t end in one or two minutes.

“Then I’ll listen now. Ayanokouji can wait.”

Right as she was expecting to talk to him later, Sudou’s reply baffled her.

Onodera seemed a little resistant, but she scratched her head lightly and broke the ice.

“Aren’t the individual prizes for this sports festival separated between boys and girls? I think you’re obviously gonna aim for first place among the men, is that right?”

“Of course. This sports festival is my biggest chance to shine after all.”

You didn’t even need to ask him. He replied with confidence.

Onodera nodded in satisfaction at that vigorous reply.

“The thing is, I’m also aiming for something this sports festival. If I take first place among the girls then it’ll be a step closer to A-Class. There’s not many chances to compete in my strong point.”

Her ability in swimming is guaranteed. She also showed her potential as a sprinter in the sports festival last year.

There’s nothing to criticize in her physical ability in the OAA, either. She was a student who held extraordinary ability for sports as a whole.

Onodera is expected to have the ability to win if she adapts to various competitions.

“You might be able to take first place. I’ll really be cheering for you.”

“Thanks. But there’s no guarantee that we can get first place even if we win the individual competitions somewhat, is there?”

“Why not? If we keep getting first place-“

Sudou isn’t wrong in thinking that all he needs to do is get first place, but in reality he might lose due to unforeseen circumstances.

“Because the points you get from the team competitions are high, right?”

I added. Onodera showed a hard expression again before she nodded in agreement.

It seemed that Onodera held something like distrust for me.

In the unanimity special exam the other day, I cut off and threw away a friend from her group.

It’s no wonder that there are students who show this sort of reaction.

“Well that’s true. Maybe it’d be crazy if there was someone who kept getting first place in the team contests. But still, it’s not easy to form teams, is it? Like what Suzune said, even if you tie five or six people together it might backfire. And you know, aside from that, I don’t know about making five or six-man teams for the team contests.”

If they were all at his level then Sudou would be able to agree.

But there will be students who will drag him down. As a result, we may very well lose the competitions because of that. That was how team competitions worked.

“Yes. I can’t think of a lot of people either. But – what if it’s two-person competitions we can definitely win in? There are events you can participate in with just girl-boy pairs.”

Here Sudou began to guess what Onodera wanted as she came to talk to him.

“Nothing will be hard if Sudou-kun and I cooperate with each other. If I had to link up then I’d want the best partner, wouldn’t I?”

It would help the class’ points, and it wouldn’t backfire on their goal of first place.

“So me… well, that might be true.”

“That’s right. Of course, this is assuming that you agree. Besides, right now, isn’t there a bad mood going on in our class? Sakura-san got expelled, Hasebe-san and Wang-chan are absent.”

She glanced at me for just an instant before turning back to Sudou.

“That’s why we have to pull our class along.”

Sudou wasn’t offended about her invitation since she was acknowledging his ability, but he wasn’t making himself very clear either.

“Am I not strong enough?”

“Of course you are. Do I need to complain about your strength?”

Though he placed absolute trust in her physical ability, it seemed that something aside from that weighed on his mind.

“You don’t want to pair up with anyone but Horikita-san?”

“Eh? N-No, I mean…”

Bull’s-eye, Sudou. He showed an awkward expression at Onodera’s words.

Pair up with someone you like. Indeed, aside from ability, that might be a very important factor for Sudou. Though there probably wouldn’t be a big difference whether he paired up with Horikita or Onodera since he couldn’t participate in swimming competitions.

“There’s Kouenji. I don’t want to say it but he’s better than me.”

“Indeed, he does have the ability. But I can’t trust Kouenji-kun. More than anything, I hate him.”

Onodera clearly denied Kouenji.

Her appeal towards Sudou was the real thing. How would Sudou respond?

“If I refuse… what would you do?”

“If there were someone else in the class who’s strong and who I could count on… well, maybe Hirata-kun, but inviting him to pair up is a bit, you know. I don’t want to give any strange misunderstandings.”

If she paired up with Yousuke who boasted enormous popularity with women, it wouldn’t just be one or two people jealous of her.

“So if Sudou-kun refuses, I’d just do what I can do alone?”

She stated the facts disinterestedly and non-threateningly.

Though it’s doubtful that she’d be able to take first place in the year, I can easily imagine her saving up points slowly and steadily.

Sudou trembled at Horikita’s name, but seeing Onodera like that, he stiffened his face right away.

It seemed he realized that he was about to refuse Onodera’s offer because of a worthless reason.

“…Okay Onodera. Let’s form a pair.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. Let’s prop this class up with our strength.”

Saying that, he extended his arm directly forward and waited for Onodera to shake it.

After staring at his hand, Onodera answered with a strong handshake.

“Best regards, Sudou-kun. Let’s make sure to take first place for the boys and the girls.”

She seemed satisfied with that promise. She returned to the classroom.

“I didn’t really imagine this, but it’s good, isn’t it?”

“I think so. You probably wanted to pair with Horikita, but it’s better to pair with Onodera and show 100% of your power than to entertain such thoughts.”

“…Yeah.”

There were only five minutes left, but we headed to the toilet as we were supposed to in the first place.

“So. This is what I had to say… it’s about Kanji and Shinohara, somewhere around those two.”

“It has to do with Kushida’s exposure?”

“Honestly, their relationship has gotten awkward. I don’t think it’s good.”

“Wouldn’t it be more interesting for the two of them to break-up? From your perspective.”

“I know I said that as a joke. But I want them to work out. Really.”

I tried asking, but it seemed like he worried for them from the bottom of his heart.

“I’m sorry to tell you, but my relationships with those students are shallow. There’s nothing I can really do.”

“Could you at least give me advice?”

“I can’t come up with a solution without talking with them. Setting aside whether or not Kushida’s words were true, there might be a need for them to lay each others’ hearts bare for a moment.”

“Isn’t that risky? It might become even more dangerous than anything we’ve had until now.”

“That’s true. That’s why you need someone who can control it. Have someone related to the two lend an ear, and if the talk seems like it’s getting out of hand, they must calm them down.”

“I-I can’t do that you know?”

“Then you have no choice but to ask someone who can.”

Here, Sudou thought for a moment instead of replying.

“Really, Kushida would’ve done something like this, wouldn’t she…?”

“Yeah. But you can’t count on her right now. If you can’t, then you have to find another student.”

Something like this is so easy that it isn’t even a problem.

“Hirata?”

As expected, even Sudou thought of him right away.

Sudou doesn’t get along with Yousuke, but this isn’t the time to say something like that.

“Tsh. I’ll have to lower my head when I ask him.”

Sudou and Yousuke have distance between them, but that might change with this.

“Thanks Ayanokouji.”

“I haven’t done anything. You just thought of it and got an answer yourself.”

That’s how our class works.

Unavoidable Path – part 1

At 5:30 I was waiting for Yousuke after coming home. I got a notice from my phone.

“Can I visit?”

A message came with a cute cat sticker from my girlfriend Kei.

The time I arranged with Yousuke was 7:30. She’s quite early.

“While we’re at it, wanna eat together?”

She added a postscript before I could reply. Looks like she actually wanted to eat dinner together.

In reply to Kei’s message, I briefly said that’s fine.

“Then I’ll have to make something.”

I could take out leftovers from yesterday, but if I were to make something quickly that Kei would like…

I opened the fridge and stared at it while thinking. A chime rang out.

When I opened my door, Kei was smiling broadly.

Though I was a bit surprised, I didn’t panic as I invited her in.

It was important how since our relationship was now public, she didn’t have to be careful about when she entered my room.

“You’re really fast.”

As she took off her shoes, Kei entered my room with practiced movements.

“I messaged you before I entered the elevatooor.”

It seemed that she wanted to visit me while I was here with the arrangement being secondary.

I quickly gave up on preparing something and sat down on the floor next to the table with Kei.

“Recently I’ve been as familiar with Kiyotaka’s room as I am with my own room. Maybe because I’m here all the time.”

“That’s good. I don’t get invited to your room though.”

“Eh, ehh? That’s a little embarrassing… well, someday if I feel like it!”

She didn’t give me a direct yes. A girl’s room would feel different.

Let’s not follow that line of thought too far.

“Come to think of it, what did you say about our relationship?”

“To the girls? They’re taking it more smoothly than I thought. I mean… nevermind.”

She stopped as she was about to say something. I was a little curious so I tried pressing her.

“What?”

“Like, you know? Hirata Yousuke kinda has his own brand. There are a lot of girls saying it’s a waste.”

I see. They don’t understand why she’d go out of her way for a guy with no brand.

Indeed, if you compare Yousuke and I then it’s no wonder that sort of thing comes up.

“I’m offended too in a way. Even though I broke it off with Yousuke-kun, it’s as if they’re implying I got rejected.”

If she switched to a guy with no brand, then there’s nothing to be done about that misunderstanding.

“But that’s only a part of it. Your reputation has been going up like a conger eel.”

“It’s just eel. How did you make that mistake?”

You’d think it was on purpose. When I thought that, Kei grinned.

“Even I know that muuuch.”

“You must have an excellent tutor.”

“I always thank you, teacher. I’ve been getting more points because of our secret lessons.”

Kei has been increasing her academic skill little by little. By September, it had reached C with a 48 on the OAA.

She had finally acquired the normal amount of knowledge for a student.

After such a trifling chat, I stood up again and headed towards the fridge.

“I’m thinking about making omurice or something. Wanna eat?”

I asked without turning around. Kei happily raised her voice right away.

“I’ll eat! Please make the ketchup a little strong, chef.”

This isn’t my first time treating Kei to a handmade meal like this.

I’ve had a few opportunities to prepare meals for her in my room every now and then since we started going out.

Kei still hasn’t really shown herself cooking for me, but I don’t really mind.

When it comes to making something you want to make, it doesn’t make a difference whether you’re a man or a woman.

I don’t hate making food. Kei herself happily eats it.

Kei loves talking while I’m not very good at it. She’s good at talking to me, and she livens up the place. We support each other and achieve balance well.

I take out eggs, ketchup, chicken meat and butter from the fridge. Once I get the cooking oil from the shelf, all the preparations are made. Then I take out some frozen cooked rice and start thawing it in the oven. While that happens I prepare onions. I really wanted to put carrots and other things too. It’s a shame that there’s no stock. Just when I put the onions on top of the cutting board and picked up a knife, I felt something behind me. Kei snuggled up tightly to my back.

“What are you doing?”

It was somewhat dangerous, so I stopped moving and asked.

“Just looking-“

Is what Kei said, but she shouldn’t be able to do that because the side of her face is stuck to my back.

“Don’t mind me. I’m just staring.”

“Okay, got it.”

For the time being I ignore her and continue my work as she told me to. I cut the onions into 5mm cubes on the board. While I did that, Kei stuck to my back the whole time without ever separating. I reached out to the bowl so I could crack the eggs when Kei put her arms around my waist and hugged me.

“What are you doing now?”

“Nn-…? I’m just looking-“

“I really don’t think you’re just looking though? This is more like sabotage.”

I won’t go so far as to caution her away, but she doesn’t seem to realize that my work efficiency is somewhat dropping.

“Ah-, happiness. Is there anything as happy as this?”

She muttered as she put more force into the arms that hugged me. She seems content.

“That’s a very cheap happiness. Isn’t there a more extravagant happiness? Like buying or watching what you want.”

“That’s not enough at all.”

“I didn’t say it well just now, but there is, isn’t there?”

“Nuh-uh, none. Even if there was, I don’t want it. I’m satisfied with this happiness here.”

If she’s satisfied with something like this, then I don’t really have much more to say.

“Can I continue cooking?”

Sure enough, it would be very inconvenient to keep this stance.

“Eh~? What to do~?”

She peeked at me with sparkling eyes and a smile.

“If I behave, I’d want a reward-?”

“There is chocolate in the fridge.”

“Buuu. Not like that… you’re kinda off. Though that’s like you. I’ll wait quietly theeen.”

As if she had found something that satisfied her from within, Kei separated herself and sat on my bed.

Now then, it looks like I’ll be able to devote myself to making omurice for now.

Kei looked between her phone and the TV as she waited for the meal to be finished. We sat around the table and had dinner a little earlier than usual.

“Now that I think about it-, about Shinohara.”

I didn’t particularly change the topic, but Kei started talking.

“I was wrong too, but it looks like that exposé was pretty effective. She hasn’t even been listening to my calls.”

Beauty depends on the taste and sense of the beholder, but those who are usually considered superior have expressed disregard for someone who is usually considered inferior. That in itself is not rare. You can see it anywhere.

There are also many cases where people say things not out of malice but simply because it entered their mind.

“Do you girls hate Shinohara?”

“Not at all. Shinohara-san is an interesting kind of girl, and she’s good at livening up a place.”

“I see. So that’s why you made fun of her and Ike.”

“…Maybe. We laughed at things that would hurt her if she heard them.”

She muttered sorrily as if she was reflecting.

“Do you hate me for saying something so mean?”

“People say bad things about other people. I have no intention of denying that. Though there are differences in scale, it’s harder to find someone who never says anything bad about other people.”

The upperclassmen at my club are oppressive and I don’t like it. I hate self-important teachers. It’s okay to say those things once or twice at the appropriate place and time. Making fun of looks or nitpicking their intellect. There are times when it goes too far, but as you’d expect it’s not unusual for people to say such things.

“But fundamentally, having the person herself hear about it is the one thing you must avoid.”

“Yeah.”

This was an exception among exceptions. It must’ve been a shock that Kushida leaked it. Which means talking about it to anyone always presents a risk.

Obviously, Shinohara must have been deeply hurt when she heard from Kushida that she was being gossiped about for her looks.

That’s not all. Friends who don’t hold a bad impression towards Shinohara, Shinohara’s lover: Ike, and Ike’s friends. Those people obviously won’t think well of Kei and her friends.

This time it was Shinohara. But next time people might gossip about Kei, Matsushita or Mori.

Once a chain reaction is set off, it takes considerable labor to stop.

“Anyway, you’re not just telling me you’re sorry, are you? What is it?”

I’ve also heard a little from Matsushita, but I needed to hear it from Kei as well.

“This misunderstanding… I mean, this damage, I’ve tried to settle it with words a few times. Right now I feel like I have no one to turn.”

“You mean nowhere to turn.”

“That’s right… th-that was on purpose okay?”

I really was mistaken.

Kei and her friends have more or less been trying to repair their damaged relationship with Shinohara themselves.

“So then, how do you think we can reconcile?”

“Are you asking me?”

“Of course. Kiyotaka could probably think of a good plan.”

There was no breakthrough in sight right now. Kei and Yousuke were facing the same problem.

“I’m thinking. Give me some more time.”

For now I tell her that and postpone my answer.

“Hold on, this is a different topic, but can I ask something a little weird?”

She looked up at me and inquired with a face brimming with curiosity.

“In the special exam, didn’t you have Sakura expelled on the basis of the OAA? If-“

When she met my eyes, Kei lost her words.

“It’s fine. Never mind.”

“Are you curious about what I’d do if you were at the bottom of the OAA?”

Kei blatantly widened her eyes.

“I said this with Ike too. If your grades are similar then friends make an overwhelming difference. I wouldn’t expel you.”

“Then, what if I had no friends? What if my status was low with the girls?”

Her emotions bordered on anxiety and forced her to spit our questions in rapid succession.

“It’s useless to think about. If we talk with that assumption, the human known as Karuizawa Kei would become a completely different person. If that were the case, our relationship wouldn’t have developed to this point.”

“… That… I see. That may be the case but… if that other person wasn’t going out with you, would you expel them?”

Even as she understood that it was meaningless, it seemed that she couldn’t go without asking.

“With the ability we’ve been assuming, probably.”

“Uu…”

“I understand that you feel hurt, but that’s not you. It really is someone else. You were hurt and bullied, then turned the tables in highschool by solidifying your position in the girls’ pecking order. You used Yousuke, met me and dated me. That’s Karuizawa Kei.”

When I replied up to there, Kei pouted her lips in blatant dissatisfaction.

“I would’ve protected you no matter who you were. That was the right answer, okay?”

“…I see.”

She wanted me to declare that I would protect Karuizawa Kei even if it wasn’t herself.

I learned that logic isn’t necessary here.

Then I let her lie down on my lap, patted her head and shifted into putting her in a good mood. After a few minutes of Kei enjoying herself, curled up on my lap like a cat, she opened her mouth in that position.

“Hey Kiyotaka. I don’t really mind how you cut off Sakura-san. Because there’s no mistake in the things you do. But was Horikita-san really correct in leaving behind Kushida-san? Won’t she always be in the way?”

The perpetrator of the crack that has fissured our class, Kushida Kikyou. Kei feels that the demerit in not expelling her is big. That’s not rare at all. It’s a natural reaction.

Everyone holds their doubts. Though they doubt, when the time comes they can’t easily declare anything. And in the end they think that it’s fine as long as it helps them. People probably started cooling down around the 2-day break on the weekend after the test. If there are people who doubt if it was the right thing to do, there will be people who are glad that it wasn’t them. And people who fear that they will be next.

“Kushida has something Airi didn’t have. Do you know what it is?”

“Eh? Studies and sports, right? Kushida-san was pretty amazing. Since she can do anything well.”

“On the surface that’s what the reason is. But that’s not what’s important.”

“…What do you mean?”

“She has the potential to be an important piece in Horikita Suzune’s awakening as a leader. Not for Yousuke or for Kei, but for Horikita, she might become something of a partner.”

“Kushida-san will…?”

“Horikita herself probably doesn’t understand fully yet. Since we were stressed for time she just had to believe in her own intuition.”

“That’s something Kushida-san has that Sakura-san doesn’t…”

“The perspective only Kushida holds, the thoughts only Kushida has, and the things only Kushida can say. Those are things she can show regardless of her popularity. And that’s what will push Horikita.”

Even though she understood in some way, Kei herself probably wasn’t completely calm.

I suppose that was an obvious reaction. This is an uncertain future.

The only thing to show that Horikita’s choice was right is an armchair theory.

“I’d understand all too well if Haruka held a grudge because that was a person close to her. Results don’t take one or two days to manifest. We’ll just have to watch over them kindly.”

“But doesn’t Hasebe-san hold a grudge against you, Kiyotaka?”

“Yeah.”

The difficulty of the unanimity test when the time limit was imminent.

No matter how much Horikita would propose for others to be expelled, it would’ve been nearly impossible to reach unanimity.

And the truth was that it would’ve been difficult to lose class points at that time.

So if I had not moved there would’ve been no salvation.

“It would be easy if you could tell the results, conclusions or answers. But the fact is that you can’t.”

“What about Horikita-san?”

“Whether she could or couldn’t clear what lied before her, either choice presented an extreme hurdle. If she had challenged it but failed, it might not end with her just not being able to clear it. She might scratch her knee, or if she’s unlucky, break a bone.”

This is exactly what you’d imagine as a hurdle on the road for which your ability was barely high enough.

“What do you think is necessary in order to clear that hurdle safely?”

“Eh…? Y-Yeah… do a lot of practice before you do it?”

“What if you can’t practice?”

“Then there’s no choice but to do it off the cuff right? There’s no choice…”

“It’s the same thing. Horikita ran and tried to clear the hurdle before her eyes without stopping her feet.”

“In other words, if Horikita had failed then she would have fallen over?”

“No, she’s just about to leap. The extent of her injuries, whether she’ll fall over, and whether she’ll sustain a serious injury herself. These things aren’t decided yet.”

It would’ve been easy to avoid that hurdle. Instead of leaping she could have went around it.

This is where I wanted to see Horikita.

I wouldn’t have imagined this right after we started our schooling. Once again, I think it’s curious myself.

“I see. But really, I can’t fully agree with Horikita-san’s judgement. Because she broke her promise. Still, she even declared that she would protect Kushida-san.”

Indeed, in one way it was a threat. It’s also a fact that the order in Horikita’s class has slackened too much now compared to before.

With the stir this created, they now know that their safety is not guaranteed. Of course, trust towards Horikita has wavered dramatically, but that can be undone with the special exams beyond this point. Though with the condition that we continue successfully approaching the A-Class.

While we were chatting, the time passed seven.

I fixed the plates we used to eat and went to the kitchen to clean them right away.

“Hey-hey-. Let’s talk here~”

“I’ll wash the dishes now so let’s do it after.”

“Eh-? But then 7:30 will arrive.”

Once Yousuke comes our discussion would start. Her voice sounded unhappy.

I ignored her and started washing the dishes. Kei kept quiet for a while, but she seemed to have lost her patience as she started making demands again.

“Now, now, no need to hold yourself back. Come here. Okay? Okay?”

As she said that, she slapped her palms against the bed three, then four times.

“It can’t be helped-“

I wanted to do the dishes before Yousuke came, but I gave up on that.

I lowered myself to the spot she patted. Kei happily poked my right cheek with her index finger.

“Your skin is so smooth for a guy that it’s almost cheeky. Do you do anything with it?”

“Just skin lotion.”

Considering the burden on teenage skin, I didn’t think that any more products than that were necessary.

“Hmmm…”

Though she understood, as if something like that didn’t actually matter, she didn’t stop poking my cheek.

I took her hand, pulled her in and stole a kiss.

I thought she’d be surprised, but she smiled while blushing as if she’d been waiting for it.

“I’ve been waiting for that since I came into your room tonight.”

“…Really.”

I was still naive in reading that sort of thing.

Then we joined lips again, closely and quietly.

The repeated kiss tasted like omurice. It was a slightly different experience.

“I love you…”

I gently embraced Kei as she clung to me, and we were enwrapped in silence.

It wasn’t an awkward thing, but a comfortable time we spent together.

I wonder how much time we spent simply embracing each other.

The doorbell rang, tearing up the stillness.

Kei was suddenly pulled back to reality. She suddenly felt embarrassed, panicked and took distance.

Even if she wasn’t quiet, the door needed a key… well, I understand how she feels.

After waiting for Kei to calm down for just a little while, we welcomed Yousuke.

He entered the room still in his uniform.

“After club, I went to Keyaki Mall with my upperclassmen.”

Yousuke noticed our attention on his uniform and said.

“Welcome, please feel free to come in-“

Seeing Kei act like this was her room, Yousuke smiled happily.

He looked after her more than anyone else since enrollment, and that was exactly why he was happy to see her and how bright she was now.

“I’m coming in.”

He carefully arranged his shoes and sat down in the room. I took out some tea.

“Thank you.”

“So what were you going to consult me about?”

Since this may take a long time, I encouraged him to speak.

Though of course I can predict everything this will be about.

“Yes. It’s about our class. I think Karuizawa-san also knows this well, but I believe that rushing into the sports festival as we are now may be dangerous. In particular, it may be difficult for the girls to coordinate.”

Since Kei would know more about that, Yousuke moved his gaze towards her.

“I spoke with Kiyotaka about Shinohara a while ago. Honestly, we’re not at the level of deciding how we’ll do the competitions.”

Since we’re still trying to repair their relationships as friends.

“I wondered if he had any good ideas. I want to borrow Kiyotaka-kun’s help.”

Kei asked for my help in the same manner she did a while ago as she turned her eyes to me.

If that’s the case, I won’t hesitate to speak.

“Yousuke, have you tried consulting with anyone else before me?”

“Eh? No… this is the first. Because I don’t think it will go well if I suddenly talk to someone else and let them know that I want the girls to reconcile.”

It would be better if he honestly wanted to borrow their strength, but if he lets them know that he wants to have them reconcile then they might be more cautious instead.

They could also suspect that there’s something behind his kind words.

“What about you?”

“As you’d expect, I still want instructions.”

“Then after this, I want you to talk to the class leader, Horikita, not me.”

“But I think Horikita-san has her hands full with Kushida-san. To bring our problems to other classmates right now would be-“

“Then if I had dealt with Kushida, would you have called Horikita?”

“That’s… I wonder. I might’ve still spoken with you, Kiyotaka-kun.”

Yousuke imagined that scenario and honestly admitted.

“Horikita-san is doing well. But I think that Kiyotaka-kun looks at everything and makes accurate judgements.”

“I’d do the same. I mean, if we leave it to Kiyotaka he can come up with a perfect answer.”

“I said it in the previous special exam too. You can’t always rely on me. If something is wrong then come to Horikita first, you adopt this process.”

“But-“

“We’ll be a burden. She won’t necessarily come up with a solution every time. So we won’t count on her. We can’t count on her. Then do you think that Horikita can truly become your leader? What if this was a leader like Ryuuen, Sakayanagi or Ichinose? Do you not think that problems can manifest while you’re dealing with something?”

The important thing is to trust and to be trustworthy. Horikita, and the class, after repeatedly failing and succeeding, are on the verge of growth.

“Failure is an experience. Everybody has faced the problem of 1+1. Of course Horikita isn’t at that stage yet, but she still has an overwhelming lack of experience.”

Before you reach the solution, you must not neglect the process of searching for the solution in discussion with one another.

“If she says that her hands are full with Kushida, then I’d like you to come talk to me.”

“…I see. I understand what Kiyotaka-kun wants to say.”

Yousuke honestly accepted my words, nodded several times and processed what I meant inside himself.

“It’s important to experience failure, but this is different from how many points you get on a test. If we get a low score, I don’t think it can be compensated for by doing our best next time. This is important. It affects the hearts of the students. If our cracked relationships completely shatter because of a naive decision… they can never be recovered.”

Something like this was expected from Yousuke. It didn’t seem that he came just to get an easy answer.

“That’s correct. But isn’t that a bit naive? It’s true that a crack has manifested in the friendships between our classmates, hasn’t it? So disagreements, quarrels, and badmouthing between friends will certainly develop into problems that cannot be recovered from?”

Hate from badmouthing, then ignoring. Escalation into bullying represents the worst case scenario.

But that really is the worst case scenario.

“Kei. Is your antagonism with Shinohara that serious?”

“No… now that you say it, it’s more like a prolonged quarrel. Though it’ll be hard for me if I say something wrong since I’m the perpetrator. They don’t really harass me or anything. And I don’t think there are that many people who hate Shinohara-san.”

They had been getting too nervous because it was becoming too serious. That was my opinion.

“Besides, you don’t intend to have only Horikita solve this, do you?”

“Of course not. If I can do anything I’ll do it.”

“Good. If you two conduct yourselves well with Horikita at your center then you’ll probably be able to weather this through.”

Though I can’t completely remove their uncertainty with just these words.

There I added the important thing.

“Of course, even if you cooperate with Horikita there will be times where you won’t be able to solve it. When that time comes I’ll lend my hand.”

If they have complete back-up, then Yousuke and Kei will be able to move without hesitation. The two showed agreement, but Yousuke still seemed to have something on his mind. His heart still wasn’t completely clear. From there we exchanged information for a while. I encouraged them to leave near eight o’ clock.

“Um… if it’s okay with you, could you let me speak with you just a little bit in private?”

When they were about to leave, Yousuke broke the ice, thinking that he couldn’t let it end like this.

“Okay. Then I’ll go first.”

Kei replied to Yousuke who said that he still had something to discuss and left quickly.

After the door was closed, Yousuke turned back to me again.

“Kiyotaka-kun. I’ll approach Horikita-san tomorrow. But do you have a clear path in your mind at this point in time?”

“Honestly, I don’t have any ideas that can instantly solve the problem with Kushida and Haruka. I hope that you guys will discuss it among yourselves and deal with it well.”

“Which means… that’s not the case with Mii-chan?”

“More or less. It will take time but there’s a chance. If there’s no time then there are drastic measures.”

“Drastic measures? If there’s anything we can do then I think we should do it.”

Yousuke showed his usual reaction even towards a girl who had feelings for him.

“I said it was drastic. I don’t recommend it.”

“What kind of method is it?”

“That is, you going to meet her and answering her feelings.”

Yousuke reacted as if he hadn’t even thought of it.

“The truth is, you’ve also liked Mii-chan. You’ve been wanting to go out with her. If you tell her something like that then she will go to school as early as tomorrow.”

It’s a bit hard to even say, but that’s the solution I struck upon right now.

“If it weren’t you, Yousuke, I wouldn’t have said something this foolish. But since you had experience faking your relationship with Kei after she asked you, I thought it might be possible.”

That’s true, Yousuke muttered, but his expression was unclear.

“The reason Karuizawa-san and I agreed to fake going out with each other was because neither of us held romantic feelings. It’s different from pretending to accept Mii-chan’s feelings. Because she’ll only be deeply hurt afterwards.”

“I don’t intend to recommend this idea, but that’s not true. It’s unclear when she started to like you, but you can’t neglect the other students who have had feelings for you since we entered this school. In other words, in exchange for you protecting Kei from bullying by going out with her, there may have been girls who were indirectly rejected and hurt because of that lie.”

“That’s-“

If Kei and Yousuke had really been going out then it would’ve been a just reason.

But with that not being the case, though the situation is different, there’s no big difference.

“What if right now, Mii-chan came crying, clung onto you and said that if you don’t go out with her then she wouldn’t be able to go to school anymore? Will you be able to refuse her decisively since you can’t pretend to do so?”

Yousuke lost his words. He probably wouldn’t be able to make that choice.

“If you can’t refuse, then you’d have two options. Start dating after telling her that you don’t love her, or lie that you’ve also loved her before dating her.”

And if true love sprouts from there, it will have possibly been the best conclusion.

“Still, I don’t… think I should do that.”

Even as he understood my piece, his emotions still prevented him, huh.

“It’s a thoroughly forceful solution. It will take some time from now, but I’m scattering seeds.”

“Got it… you’re really strong, Kiyotaka-kun. You’re not showing the slightest signs of being dragged down by how you expelled Sakura-san.”

As Yousuke spoke quietly, I couldn’t see any sadness or anger from him.

“For me, my hands… still feel the sensation from that time.”

He looked down on his hands on either side of him and stared at the palms.

“The sensation of touching my tablet, of pressing agree. I can’t forget it.”

Yousuke made every effort for his classmates. He couldn’t show too much weakness.

But he’s been thinking about the responsibility of Airi’s expulsion from the same perspective as me and agonizing over it.

“I know what you were thinking at that time, Yousuke. Of course you wouldn’t agree to expel Airi, who hadn’t done anything wrong in that test. But still, you held it in. Even though we did something that you couldn’t agree to in the very end, you held yourself back from saying that.”

He was dealt an outrageous card. If he complained about that situation, looking them directly in the eye, our classmates would have regained their composure. If their field of view which had been narrowed by the pressure of the time limit was widened, it might have been impossible to reach unanimity.

“Our class rising to A-class… that is, the most important thing… that was what I told myself.”

Even if he understood mentally, he couldn’t agree. That was probably what it was.

“Hasebe-san, Kushida-san and Mii-chan are absent. I wonder how long this will go on. Our classmates have seen how students with bad results can get cut off, they are filled with trepidation. The bright class we had until last week has become dead silent as if it was a lie.”

Though he moved towards the solution, he must’ve been agonizing over the same thing over and over again, asking himself.

“I understand well that you don’t agree with my and Horikita’s decision. But there’s nothing to do but accept it. There’s nothing to do but understand how much power our class holds now and bite your lips. That’s exactly why Horikita needs a lot of support. If you can choose a certain path then you can also choose a wrong path. And you can even choose an uncertain path.”

At the time I tell him, there’s no way that Yousuke can digest all of it within himself.

“I – wondered if we should’ve chosen to reach the time limit…”

Yousuke could no longer endure it. His shoulders shook slightly.

He didn’t want to bear even the thought of sacrificing someone.

Even still, being able to reach the solution in that situation was certain growth.

“…Have I become strong, or have I broken. If a time like that comes again, I don’t know how I’d solve it and I’m scared.”

I couldn’t see his face as he hung his head. Then he wiped his eyes with his sleeves and raised it.

“I’m sorry for saying weak-minded things even though you should be the one who’s suffering the most.”

“It’s fine. You saved Horikita and I many times in the special exams. I’m expecting tougher battles to happen from now on. I want you to always lend your power for the sake of the class.”

Yousuke nodded. His heart is probably still wounded, but he showed a small smile.

Yousuke was extending his hand to my front door when he stopped it.

“…I have a lot of things to thank you for today.”

“Do you resent me for having Airi expelled?”

Unlike other students, Yousuke didn’t show it on the surface, but it would be no wonder if that were the case.

“…If that were the only thing I saw. But I believe in you.”

As he thought over his words, he added as if they didn’t sit well with him.

“…No. I want to believe in you.”

If it were mindless acceptance then I’d think that Yousuke was having dangerous thoughts. But deep within his eyes he definitely had his own will. I believe you so don’t betray us, it demanded resolutely.

“Then good night.”

I must’ve been able to remove some of the load on Yousuke’s back, but I might have also given him more weight to carry. If all of the pus was thoroughly removed tonight, it will have been convenient… but how much results can I anticipate?

At any rate, I need to follow up, one step at a time.

Unavoidable Path

Once again, this class is made to stand in front of the several problems plaguing them.

It’s unforgivable as a leader to just watch from the sidelines as the rotting progresses here and there.

That girl probably wants to solve everything by herself. Wanting to do things on your own isn’t a bad thing, but if you’re divorced from ability then it’s just idealism. No, even if you have the ablity to solve the problem, you can’t always deal with it on your own. Right now what’s in demand is trust in one’s comrades. Then to link up with each other and pick a path in coordination. From the weekend to today, I haven’t done anything to actually lend a hand. I finished looking at today’s news on my phone and stood up from my seat a little later than the droves of students leaving to play after school.

The man who was waiting for that quickly followed me.

I had seen that if he got flustered from not being able to take the first step to the solution then he would come to me.

“Um, Kiyotaka-kun. Could you make time tonight? I’d like to consult with you a little bit.”

He approached me and said with a small voice while paying attention to our surroundings.

“I plan to meet with Kei tonight. Can’t we have it now?”

I didn’t actually have such plans. I lied and looked at his reaction.

“That would be…”

Of course he wouldn’t say yes.

Yousuke has club. He can’t make free time right after school.

Once the sports festival gets closer club activities will temporarily be suspended, so he’ll probably want to participate as much as he can right now.

“I’m kidding. I’ll tell Kei. Our date can be next time.”

“Th-Thanks.”

“I’ll check one more time just to be safe, but you do have something to consult me about right?”

I knew but replied like that deliberately. Yousuke nodded with no suspicion.

“Yes. I think we should move quickly.”

“Okay. Anyway, if my room is fine then I’ll give you my time tonight.”

Like a child, Yousuke’s cheeks slackened and broke into a smile at my positive answer.

“If possible it’d be great if Karuizawa-san could be there with us. Is that fine?”

“Kei too? Of course she would probably be happy to be there, but will she not be in the way?”

“There are a few things we have to settle. I want to borrow her power, too.”

A lot changes depending on Kei’s presence, since she had access to the girls’ information network. I didn’t even have to ask to know that what Yousuke was trying to undertake had to do with Kushida, Shinohara and Haruka.

“Then… how about around 7:30?”

“That’s fine. I’ll be there on time.”

After narrowing his eyes happily, Yousuke started a brisk walk to his club.

If anyone had a problem he would extend his hand right away.

“The two problems with our class.”

Of course, there’s no helping this either. Since I’ve been the one until now to lend Yousuke a hand when he was troubled, I can’t avoid this.

It’s not easy to destroy what you’ve built up, but it’s unavoidable.

Now then. First of all, I’ll tell Kei to come to my dorm at 7:30.

Price of Victory – part 3

The day after the sports festival’s concrete rules were explained, morning at homeroom time.

Just like the previous day, the atmosphere in the class was anything but lighthearted.

That was because of the three empty seats. Just like yesterday they continued to be absent huh. It’s not rare for anyone to rest from school because they’re not feeling well. But everyone is likely thinking that these three people are resting for a different reason.

In the case of consecutive absences, students are usually required to visit the clinic in Keyaki Mall and get a medical examination. On the other hand, if they have a medical examination then there will be no big problems. In other words, even if it’s not a fever, if you appeal to having some sort of condition then the clinic will receive you for two or three days.

It’s just that the three haven’t had a medical examination from the clinic from what Chabashira-sensei said in homeroom time.

The two aside from Kushida have contacted her, but how long this will be tolerated is unclear. The problem is if they continue to rest tomorrow and onwards. Haruka’s absence was related to Airi’s expulsion. Wang-chan’s was because her feelings for Yousuke had been disclosed. Kushida was absent because her true nature had been made clear. None of these had anything to do with illness.

What would happen if this continued for three days, five days, a week? The school obviously wouldn’t think of it as a coincidence. They might even embark on an investigation. Just as Chabashira-sensei herself said, sooner or later it will also have a big effect on class points.

Several cracks were already starting to open in places that couldn’t be seen.

Wang isn’t the only one who suffered from Kushida’s exposure. Ike and Shinohara, a newly formed couple, has been dragged into the fire. That’s also a cause for concern. They don’t even seem to be speaking with Kei, Matsushita and Mori who actually talked behind their backs.

Their names weren’t explicitly called there, but the fact that Satou and Maezono haven’t been speaking with Shinohara could well be due to the same reason.

The usual groups are changing. This was originally a class with strong bonds between the girls.

The fact that a gap is opening between them right now is obvious.

This should be the time to start deciding the members for the team contests in order to score more points. But this class still hasn’t reached that point yet.

If they tried to make the teams as it is now, the internal rift would progress even faster. It’s precisely because she understands that even Horikita hasn’t brought it up. Having said that, it’s impossible for mediation to happen here. Not only Horikita, even Yousuke knows that.

In spite of all that, time flows and our morning homeroom ended.

Right after that, I received a message on my tablet.

“I have something to discuss. Follow me.”

It was a short instruction from Chabashira-sensei.

Shortly after Chabashira-sensei left the class, I stood up as if I was going to the toilet.

In an all-out display of the power of my seat at the very back and right next to the hallway, I was not seen by anybody. When we turned a corner heading to the staff room, I saw Chabashira-sensei position herself with her back towards the wall.

“It’s rare for you to call me out like this. Do you have urgent business?”

For a second, I thought that it would be related to the three absentees but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

“Right. I have something I need to tell you. It’s about Sakura.”

“Airi?”

It’s already been a week since Airi left this school. Time has passed.

Was there anything she would have to tell me now?

“Of course, the school has gone through the procedure regarding her expulsion. Sorting her luggage and absorbing her private points. Well, those necessary items… there’s an aftermath.”

Though she presented it in a straight way, her words were a little ambiguous.

Was it because of her feelings at her class being short of one student?

“Things purchased within the school fundamentally belong to the student. The person decides how to treat them. There’s no problem with leaving it or bringing it. Expulsions are formally accepted within the staff room, but… something unthinkable happened before that.”

“Unthinkable, you say.”

“Yeah. After the unanimity special exam, evidence of Sakura using 5000 of her private points was found. I should say that it’s difficult to decide what to do with it.”

“Private points are seized on expulsion aren’t they?”

“Yeah. But that’s only valid once it is formally accepted. The school thinks that this is a very gray area. For example, if she had transferred those private points to a certain student then it shouldn’t be acknowledged.”

“That’s true. If someone gave all their private points before being expelled then it could be a problem. But are you saying that Airi gave someone 5000 points?”

“No, not that. Sakura-“

I heard an unthinkable way to use private points.

As I listened to her explanation, I realized that I wasn’t unrelated.

“-So that’s why I thought to tell you, since you have something to do with it. Of course, you have no duties related to this case. If you refuse then I’ll deal with it.”

Airi acted in the short amount of time after her expulsion was decided.

As I carried a hunch on what I would answer, I decided what I should do.

“It’s not such a big amount anyway, so please leave it like that.”

“So you’ll pay up for it instead?”

“There’s no problem with that, is there?”

“No. Since those private points will have been used by you for your own convenience, the school probably won’t see it as a violation.”

“Understood.”

I understood that sensei was promising that it wouldn’t be a problem.

“I’d like to ask one thing. This is related to you… isn’t it?”

Chabashira-sensei asked as she sent a slightly probing glance at me.

“No it’s not. Perhaps she drew this conclusion by herself in that limited amount of time.”

Of course, I don’t know the details yet myself, but as time passes an answer will naturally appear.

“Anyway, small problem or not, having it settled is good news for me. The class situation isn’t all good with how it’s been.”

The picture of her worrying about her class like a homeroom teacher did not suit her at all.

“What’s with those eyes?”

“Nothing. Indeed, the class is unstable as you say. I intended to forcefully correct it, but I may not need to.”

“What do you mean?”

“Please watch attentively. The picture of the students growing one by one.”

Chabashira seemed a little unsatisfied, but she nodded quietly.

Price of Victory – part 2

“Ayanokouji-kun. Do you have time after this?”

Right after our lunch break started, Horikita approached me and said.

“Kei and I-“

“We were gonna eat together. Sorry, okay? You caaan’t borrow Kiyotaka.”

Kei came running. She wedged herself between Horikita and I to force her away.

Then she thrusted her hands in a no gesture.

“Actually, asking a boy who has a girlfriend to come with you is kinda-?”

“Yes. But it’s not me who wants to borrow him but someone else. And he’s not a girl. Will you still not give your permission?”

She faced her phone towards us. Kei saw the screen before I did.

“Yagami… Takuya? Who?”

“It doesn’t matter who sent the message. What matters is the content.”

The message Yagami had sent to Horikita seemed to have been sent about an hour ago.

“At lunchtime, can you please call Ayanokouji-senpai to the student council room? The president wishes for him. If you have a difficult time then I will inform her so please contact me.”

That’s what was written.

“I myself have some obligation as a member of the student council. If they tell me that they need something with a classmate then I can’t refuse.”

She at least wanted to convey the message to us.

“Looks like President Nagumo wants to meet with you. What did you do this time?”

“I didn’t do anything.”

Recently anyway, I added in my heart.

“If you refuse, Yagami-kun will come here. If you still refuse… President Nagumo may come. So what should I tell them?”

Horikita was simply the messenger. She’s probably not interested in seeing how I’ll respond.

“Sorry Kei. It’ll be a hassle later on if I ignore an order from the student council president.”

“Tch. Well if it’s the president then there’s nothing we can do… Satou-saaan, wanna eat together-?”

Kei understood that she had to agree in this situation. She went over to Satou and the others immediately.

“Your girlfriend’s mood changes fast.”

She muttered in admiration or exasperation.

“I’ll go now.”

“Then I’ll tell Yagami-kun.”

“If the student council members have each others’ contact information, wouldn’t it be faster for President Nagumo to contact you directly without having to go through Yagami?”

“The only one in the student council I chat with is Yagami-kun because he’s the only one who asked directly.”

I understood and left the classroom. Horikita also came out into the hallway.

“I don’t know why he wants you, but I recommend that you avoid angering him as much as possible.”

After she gives me words of advice, I split with Horikita on the way and reluctantly head to the student council room.

I thought he would come to me directly, but having me come to him would be many times easier.

I arrived in front of the student council room and knocked softly.

After a little while, I heard Nagumo’s voice from within the room and opened the door.

As I expected, the only one I could see in the room was Nagumo.

“Yoo Ayanokouji. Anything new lately?”

He leads with a light jab.

The chaos in my life has been caused by the orders of nobody but the student council president Nagumo himself, who is now before me.

The pressure I get everyday from the gazes the third years lay on me hasn’t lowered at all.

Far from it, the third years who weren’t particularly conscious of me before have engraved me into their memories as if it were a matter of course. For the upperclassmen, I am without a doubt the most notorious underclassman.

Even though they don’t know the details they remember me as the underclassman who defied Nagumo.

“Nothing in particular. That’s what I want to say, but I more or less do have some troubles.”

It would’ve been easy to pretend that I haven’t noticed anything, but if I don’t show him annoyance then this might escalate needlessly.

“As the student council president, you’re free to consult me regarding those troubles, you know?”

“I might just be overthinking it. When I’m really troubled I’ll borrow your help.”

If I improve his mood to an extent, there’s a chance that Nagumo will pull away.

…No, that’s too optimistic. What Nagumo wants is a direct fight with me. Of course he won’t be satisfied with something of this caliber.

As Nagumo gets a defined feel, he switches the topic since the talk wasn’t going to end there.

“You’ve heard of the sports festival rules right? The time where we can have a direct showdown has come, Ayanokouji. There are competitions that don’t segregate by school year within the festival. Fight me there.”

“Are you going to give rough discipline to your junior? I’ve seen your OAA, President Nagumo. As long as it’s not a competition that has a lot to do with luck, I won’t have any chance of winning. The result is clear as day.”

Though I have no choice but to reply humbly, Nagumo wouldn’t accept that.

“You are someone who would answer like that. You think I’ll be satisfied if you talk humbly. No, I guess there’s no helping it. Right now you can only talk as an inferior.”

It seemed that he wasn’t a man who couldn’t see through my shallow thoughts.

“I understand that you’re not getting carried away. I myself would only be wasting my time if I keep you company for long. So if you win just once against me in this sports festival, I’ll let everything up to now be water under the bridge.”

“Just once, you say?”

That was far more lax than I had imagined.

“Are you sure about just one win, is what you seem to be thinking. Would that be easy for you?”

“That is not true. But I think there’s a possibility.”

“You have to win all of them. Or you have to win more than me. It’d be embarrassing for me to give you a condition like that as the student council president.”

I don’t think he’s pulling himself down just because of pride. No, he’s using his pride as a shield as he tries to pull me into the battlefield.

“But I’ll add a condition. Apart from our match, participate in five competitions of my choosing. If you’re absent for even one, it’s your loss.”

“What will happen if I lose? Will you be satisfied with that victory, president?”

“That’d be nice. As long as your worries don’t disappear, I might keep calling you here like this. Or you might get harrassed by your troubles even more often.”

“My class has its own plan. Can I have a little time?”

“Well, you need it. I’ll give you a week. Contact me until next week, monday.”

“Understood. If this talk is over, may I excuse myself?”

“Don’t be so hasty. Or do you have plans after this? You haven’t made any promises even though you were called by me, have you?”

“No, it would seem not. I don’t have plans.”

“That’s a relief.”

Nagumo continues talking as he checks something on his phone from time to time.

It doesn’t seem like he intends to let me go yet.

“Excuse me.”

I heard a voice I hadn’t heard in a long time from beyond the door.

“Eh-“

Ichinose held a plastic bag in her hand.

“…Sorry for the wait, Nagumo-senpai.”

“Sorry for not being able to go with you today.”

“No…”

“Ah, this? Honami and I have lunch everyday at the student council room. Student council work is hectic, so my right hand has been making herself busy.”

I’ve noticed that we’ve been bumping into each other less often during lunch. So that’s what it was.

If she was in the student council room where normal students aren’t allowed to enter then there’s no way I’d see her.

“When we’re together we talk about many of our troubles. Right? Honami.”

“Y-Yes.”

“I told her that we’d have a visitor today. Eat with us Ayanokouji.”

I could see three lunchboxes in the bag.

Though he finished speaking with me, it seemed that he had intended to have me take my lunch here from the very beginning.

It would be easy to refuse. It would be tough on Ichinose emotionally to sit with me right now.

But I was surrounded since I told him I had no plans. There was no way out.

“You mentioned that you have no plans after this, right? Then sit.”

After being surrounded and being ordered by the student council president, I might as well have no right to refuse.

I sat down away from Nagumo.

As if she always ate beside him, Ichinose gave Nagumo the plastic bag and sat to his side. Slightly looking down and away from me, she started unpacking her lunch.

Nagumo must have noticed her acting unnatural. He must be remembering our exchange on the ship.

“The rules are very different from last year’s sports festival.”

“So much so that I’m thankful. If we had a sports festival with the same rules as last year then my victory would’ve been assured.”

According to the rules of last year’s sports festival, the red team was pitted against the white team.

Nagumo held the whole third year. Which means that he could’ve had the students not belonging to his own team lose on purpose.

No matter how hard the first and second years fought, there would be almost no chances of winning.

Finally, the conversation that should’ve been shared between the three of us became a rally between only Nagumo and Ichinose. I ate my lunch in peace and silence.

00010.jpeg

I finished eating before they were even half-done with their lunch. Then I closed the lid and picked it up.

“What, you’re already done eating? You can put it over there.”

“Thank you very much.”

Despite my reply, Nagumo’s eyes were already pointed at Ichinose, not me.

Ichinose herself continued to face Nagumo as if to ensure that she wouldn’t pay any attention to me.

“Please excuse me.”

There was nothing left to do in this place so I left the student council room.

“A strategy that shows superiority, huh.”

From an outsider’s perspective it could be seen as insulting, but that’s meaningless if I myself haven’t received any emotional damage. If that was his goal, then he should have had more student council members spectate.

If he had done that then he could have established a rhetoric of how pitiful I was around me.

Nevertheless, as far as I could see Nagumo was probably going to continue making contact with Ichinose.

It wouldn’t be strange if an incident that changed the nature of their relationship occurred depending on the situation.

I thought about the effects of that as I started walking.

Joining Nagumo will likely influence Ichinose Honami’s growth.

If all goes well then she might be favored enough to receive the seat of student council president.

Then her self-confidence – no, that’s too naive. If Nagumo’s attachment to Ichinose is caused by me, then he could very well throw her away at the very end. Her heart and body would be spent and she wouldn’t become the student council president. If Horikita, who contributed less than her, is recommended, then her spirit will be crushed within a year.

In that sense I can’t make light of the way Nagumo conducts himself.

I need to be careful about Nagumo, but the thing I must do right now lies somewhere else.

Because although the sports festival is fast approaching, preparations for the cultural festival after that are needed. Those who made the proposal, Satou, Matsushita and Maezono, are temporarily suspending it because of the class situation, but employees for the maid cafe must be secured.

Airi’s participation which I originally wanted to count on is gone. Haruka’s participation also seems unlikely at the moment. Even Kushida, one of our stronger cards, has disappeared.

Neither can I foolishly entrust my classmates to even study the basics regarding this field.

If I bring up the maid cafe while a fissure has opened in the class relationships, there’s a risk that I’d be asked, what the hell are you saying, and be considered a nuisance. Then it would be leaked because of that.

“Maid cafe… huh.”

I don’t know my right from my left when it comes to this program, but a big profit can be had for its budget.

A winning plan and research into what kind of programs our rivals will have are also necessary.

Price of Victory – part 1

When I came to the classroom, I noticed right away that the air was different from before the special exam as expected.

First, several students turned their eyes towards me.

Many of them were students that I didn’t usually have much relation to, but it was nothing to be surprised about.

If you think about how distantly and quietly I carried myself until now, the actions I showed were quite intrusive.

Many of them can’t swallow my relationship with Kushida and the attitude that she had been showing until now.

Even if it weighs on their mind, there’s not many students who would directly come to me to talk about it.

“Good morning Ayanokouji-kun.”

In the midst of that, Matsushita spotted and approached me happily.

“Good morning.”

The gazes of both genders shifted to surprise at this unexpected interaction.

Though Matsushita has waved at me from afar, this might be the first time she called out and approached me just as I entered the school.

Was she anxious about what’s been happening for the past few days, or did she have another goal?

This Matsushita has a high opinion of my ability. From the scuffle I had trying to have Kushida expelled, it’s possible that instead of lowering her opinion of me got higher. Even with Airi’s expulsion, Matsushita was one of the students who expressed her agreement, saying that it couldn’t be helped.

“Are we finally gonna move up to A-Class?”

“I wonder.”

When I sidestepped her light jab, she withdrew right away as if she thought that there was no need to say more than that. Then she faced to the side.

“I guess there are a lot of things happening for now, but I think you shouldn’t mind them.”

After saying that, she added.

“Though you probably aren’t, since it’s you, Ayanokouji-kun.”

She hit me with her actual thoughts.

“The important thing is not Ayanokouji-kun or Horikita-san. Right?”

How was I dealing with these results? It seemed that more than Horikita, Matsushita understood… no, interpreted my feelings accurately.

The problems were with Shinohara, Haruka, Mii-chan and Kushida.

The names I just mentioned are those of the students who had especially suffered damage in the unanimity special exam.

Shinohara’s painful gaze sometimes looked towards me.

She wasn’t looking at me, but at Matsushita. Though Matsushita herself seemed unbothered.

“This weekend, you see, I had all these arrangements but they got canceled.”

She murmured in a quiet voice, perhaps noticing Shinohara’s eyes on her.

“At times like this, girls usually drag it on.”

“Must be tough.”

“Well I’m the one at fault.”

Kei, Matsushita and the others made fun of Shinohara and Ike’s coupling at first. They made fun of her appearance behind her back, so it’s natural for Shinohara to be mad.

“This is just another day for me. We’ve been in tougher binds.”

Men, who only quarrel on the outside, cannot understand the nature of female relationships.

I want to but I don’t want to understand.

From there, no other student really called out to me and time passed.

Horikita also arrived later, but Kushida was nowhere to be found.

Sudou and some other students tried to call out to her, but since she barely made it in time, the chime rang out and everyone returned to their seats.

Kushida didn’t show herself in front of Horikita all weekend and it seemed that she intended to continue her absence.

With her empty seat standing out, homeroom started.

Even the advisor Chabashira-sensei seemed to stare at the several seats that were already vacant.

“Kushida, Hasebe, and Wang are absent huh. That’s something you don’t see everyday.”

We didn’t know the details behind their absences, but Chabashira-sensei was different.

“Hasebe and Wang have sent notice that they’re not feeling well so their absence will be accepted as normal. Kushida hasn’t contacted me, so I will call her after this. We will see right away if she simply overslept or if she’s so unwell that she cannot wake up.”

She exaggerated a bit, but she was probably implying that nine times out of ten, she’s not sick.

Someone being absent is nothing rare after this much time in school.

But it’s the first time in the past one and a half years that three people rested at once. No matter how many were absent until now, Chabashira-sensei didn’t say anything. She’s different from before, where it seemed like she wasn’t interested in dealing with us. If this were a normal school, using rest as an excuse would always come back to you.

If you skipped school for a week your grades would be affected, and you may also have to go to school for classwork.

But in this school, one person’s responsibility is everyone’s responsibility.

Though they weren’t speaking, even Chabashira-sensei must have understood that they were thinking about something.

“Don’t look so nervous. Resting for one or two days won’t affect your class points. It’s not unheard of for three people to feel unwell at the same time.”

She declared that there would be no effect on the class.

My classmates must have been relieved at her clear words.

“Although if they rest for long then that might not be the case. Not to mention that if they’re pretending to be sick, problems will surface little by little.”

She looked at the seat of Kushida, who hadn’t contacted her, and added.

“Well, pretending might be a bit of an exaggeration, but if no illness is identified then there will be a limit even if they claim to feel unwell. Let’s hope that they’ll recover quickly.”

Whether on purpose or not, the gazes of my classmates gathered on Horikita. In the unanimity special exam, she prioritized her own thoughts and declared that Kushida would stay. It’s no wonder that the spear would be pointed at Horikita.

That spear… though their gazes focused on her, Horikita did not even flinch.

Even if they didn’t know how she felt, a bit of trembling would’ve been natural.

After staring, Chabashira-sensei cleared her throat and forced the students’ attention away from Horikita.

“The absentees are concerning, but they don’t need to be the only ones you concern yourselves with. The unanimity special exam is over. You must face the next battle.”

She lightly placed her palm on the monitor behind her and activated the monitor.

“I would like to explain the details of the sports festival and the special rules for this year. Listen well.”

The sports festival waiting for us will be just the same as last year and every year. There were students who thought that way.

“Special rule… you mean this sports festival will be different from last year’s, Sensei?”

Chabashira nodded towards the question raised by Sudou, who was more excited for the sports festival than anyone else.

“The new modus operandi proposed by the student council has been applied in the uninhabited island and other tests. It attempts to further emphasize individual prowess, and that is realized in this sports festival.”

In the uninhabited island test, Kouenji, who possessed high academic ability and physical ability far off the charts, was very proactive. He gained not only class points but a private point that would act as a shield.

It was the exact embodiment of a school for the elite. Though on the other hand it also exposed students with no ability to the danger of being expelled. The sports festival would place similar emphasis on individual prowess. Just from those words, it seemed likely that this would be a tough test for students such as Keisei who specialized in academics but held insecurity towards their physical ability.

“Not a few students are worried, but this sports festival has been adjusted so that those who lack ability will not be expelled, nor will losses be restricted to individuals. After all, no one can be perfect in both studies and physical activity.”

Perhaps to avoid a little panic, Chabashira-sensei explained gently.

Her way of speaking had softened compared to last week. Some students glanced at each other, surprised.

She did not need to narrate the fact that the outline and rules of the sports festival were displayed on the monitor.

Sports Festival Overview and Rules

Overview
A sports festival consisting of many items involving all school years
Time period ・ 9am to 4pm (12 noon to 1pm will be used for break time)

Students participate in events of their own choosing and gain points. Classes are credited and compete with their total points.

Rules
・ Every student is given 5 points at the start.
・ Students participating in the festival are required to participate in 5 distinct events
・ All events have a participation award of 1 point
・ Winners will be given an additional number of points corresponding to the content of the event
・ For the 6th event onwards, it is possible to participate after paying 1 point (it is impossible to receive the participation award of 1 point)
・ Each person can participate in a maximum of 10 events
・ In the event that a student has participated in less than 5 competitions by the end of the sports festival, all of their points will be forfeited
・ Students who are absent or fail to participate in competitions in which they have entered will lose 2 points barring valid reasons
・ Students who have finished their competitions will be able to cheer from a few designated areas

The text above was displayed on the monitor.

After reading over this outline and these rules just once, you can see that this is completely different from last year.

“This is the rough outline and rules for this year’s sports festival. The whole student body will not spectate a single competition at a time. Instead, various competitions will happen concurrently in different places.”

“I-It kinda looks hectic.”

Sudou conjured a rough image of the day itself in his head and was baffled.

“The first priority is to aim for the winner’s prizes for the competitions, but there needs to be a detailed schedule. If you wish to perform in many competitions and win then it will be a busy sports festival. Competitions are divided roughly into two parts. First are the basic competitions. These are competitions that can be entered individually. Fundamentally, they are uniform in that the first place will get five points, the second three points, the third one point, and all participants one point. The others are called special competitions involving groups. They can be entered with two or more people and are set to offer better rewards which are evenly distributed among the participating team. The rewards are appealing, but coordination is necessary. Participating for too long is also one of the pitfalls that have been prepared.”

Individual contests and team contests are clearly separated with team contests giving more points, huh.

The students who lack physically must be grateful for their consideration to not give any penalty towards those who get the least numbers of points.

“Since the rewards for each of the team contests are different, be sure to check every one of them.”

They’re simple rules once you understand them, but there are unexpectedly many things that need to be done.

The five points given in the beginning and the five points given for participating combined make ten points total which will be given regardless of the results as long as you participate and finish your competitions. And if by some accident, a student is not able to complete the minimum requirements, their ten points will be lost.

Putting together the points assuming that everyone can participate, Ichinose’s class will get 400 points with 40 people while this class will get 380 points, missing two people. Which means we will be fighting with a handicap of 20 points from the start.

The clear reward for taking first place in an individual contest is five points. We would want at least four people to take first place. It doesn’t feel like a lot, but each person is limited to participating in 10 events.

Which means that working Sudou to the full in 15 or 20 events for easy points will be impossible. This weighs unexpectedly heavily.

“Paying out of your points to participate in six or more events is a choice that’s left up to the individual and the class. You are given freedom there. Then the rankings for each class per school year will be decided based on the total points gathered by the time the sports festival ends.”

The monitor changed to display the rewards per school year.

Ranks and Rewards per Class
1st Place
150 Class Points

2nd Place
50 Class Points

3rd Place
0 Class Points

4th Place
Minus 150 Class Points

The class point transactions are a little too big for a usual exam. It probably has something to do with how the sports festival is a special exam involving all school years and how the current class point transactions for the cultural festival are relatively lax.

“The class rewards are listed above. The individual rewards will now be displayed.”

The monitor is enough to display the class rewards on their own, but it won’t stop there.

This was supposedly a sports festival that would challenge individual ability, so it was obvious for individual rewards to also be prepared.

Sudou leaned forward holding saliva in his mouth and waited for the monitor to shift. It’s the event where he gets to shine in the most every year, and he knew that more than anyone.

Individual Contest Rewards (Separated by year and gender)

1st Place
2,000,000 private points or a class transfer ticket (limited)

2nd Place
1,000,000 private points

3rd Place
500,000,000 private points

Sudou fist pumped at the high amounts of private points being offered as rewards.

To add to that, a phrase that I had not seen before was written.

“C-Class transfer ticket-!?”

Never having seen this before, the class was shocked and became noisy.

“Even the school has been showing a careful stance towards the introduction of this new system. The introduction of the protection point was unparalleled, and it hasn’t even been a long time since that happened. But it’s natural for individuals who show ability to be given the right to ascend.”

The winners of this school are only the students who are able to graduate in A-Class.

If someone was able to get number one in the sports festival, an exam where physical ability was in high demand, it’s no wonder that the school judged that they should be bestowed with the right to change classes.

Relatively speaking, after all, the sports festival didn’t seem to fall under the category of any other special exam. But what struck my curiosity was how 2,000,000 private points and the ticket to transfer classes was treated with the same value. The amount of private points to transfer classes is 20,000,000. It’s a digit off. Still, the right to transfer classes is given. The answer to that incongruence was probably in the limitedness of the class transfer ticket.

“Limited… like if you transfer you can’t come back?”

“No, I don’t think so? That wouldn’t matter.”

Sudou was shaken. He holds a conversation with Ike about the word limited although they’re separated.

“You are given the right to change classes. But, it’s also true that not everything is certain at this point in time. Thus, the limit refers to the time period in which it can be used. It can only be used within two school terms. That is to say, if it is not used by the time the third term starts then it will become ineffective.”

The limit was that the class transfer ticket came with an expiration date, as it were.

In that case, I can agree to it having the same value as 2,000,000 points in some sense.

If it stayed until graduation then it would literally be a ticket to A-Class, but because of the time limit, it’s necessary to see through which class will remain, or which class will rise to the top in the end.

If someone transferred to another class from their current class, but in the end, their current class graduates as A-Class, the ticket would have been a honeytrap, and they would regret it for a long time.

Even if you don’t suffer that worst case scenario, you’d need quite some courage to use it.

Because leaving your class which you’ve grown accustomed to over the past year and a half is no simple matter.

Hypothetically, even if Sudou gains that right and thinks objectively about leaving Horikita and his friends to transfer to A-Class, I still can’t imagine him transfering classes so easily.

Though the sports festival will attract a lot of attention, it’s not as if you get a guarantee for A-Class from a single activity.

It seems that it will be necessary to remember that.

Though that was only limited to the 2nd years. The value would once again change depending on the year.

The 1st years still haven’t gotten that close with their current classes. There may be people who would throw them away and transfer to A-Class or the class they feel will be A-Class in the future.

On the other hand, the 3rd year students would be able to transfer to Nagumo’s class, which could be called the greatest right.

Because it would practically be the same as graduating in A-Class. Regardless of the school year, the right to transfer classes opens up more possibilities.

It will be important to see the effects this will have in the future.

The school will likely also be watching. Then they will decide whether or not to give a similar ticket again.

Looking at it holistically, it seems like a curious reward with an interesting balance.

“The students who gain first place among the boys and girls will be able to pick their reward. Sudou, if you intend to aim for the top with individual contests, then you should think about this carefully.”

I could see Sudou’s back stiffen.

Don’t jump to getting the 2,000,000 points because of your blind trust in your friends. Look at the future.

Stay in Horikita’s current class, or transfer to Sakayanagi’s class which is in the lead.

He has a right to face his future and consider it carefully.

“Well then, let’s start with more detailed explanations. There are two types of competitions: those that will be disclosed before the day itself and those that will not be disclosed until the day itself. Which means that some events that have to be challenged impromptu will be prepared.

Apart from basic competitions like the 100-meter dash or the obstacle course, several different, interesting events were shown. PK, Basket Shoot Showdown, Tennis Singles or mixed gender doubles. It was packed with events that wouldn’t be seen in any normal school festival.

“Because of the limit of participants and time constraints, you will not necessarily be able to participate in all of the events you wish to participate in. If you force an unreasonable time schedule then you may not make it in time to participate, and you will be treated as an absentee. Don’t forget the risk of losing points.”

Students who excel physically in relation to the whole student body must be put to many events where they can gain points efficiently. That necessitates thinking. Luck will be needed for whoever participates in whatever event. The ability to predict will possibly be needed.

Though if the sports festival is held at this rate then the students will most likely panic.

On the day itself, if certain events barge in on the students then it wouldn’t be much of a competition.

Though of course, the school must understand that.

“As for participation in the disclosed events, reservations will open tonight at 10pm on the exclusive app. First come first serve across all the school years. Cancellations will be accepted until one week before the sports festival, but you can only cancel three times. Reservations close two days before the event. If you haven’t registered in at least five events by that time, then you will automatically be assigned to events with vacant slots.”

After she said that, a schedule that would probably be displayed in the app was shown.

“Let’s try registering in the 100-meter dash.”

The screen changed. 『100 meter dash ・ Maximum of seven people per school year and gender. Total of four races. It is possible to volunteer for any race. If there are any vacancies then it is also possible to register on the day itself. Contestants must arrive five minutes before the competition begins. It is not necessary to wait until the competition ends. First race starting time ・ 10:15am』

From here, if you combine the male and female participants then a maximum of 56 people can participate in the 100-meter dash (per school level.) Regardless of which race you’re participating in, the competition starts at 10:15, so you must be there up to five minutes before that time. Looking at how you’re not required to wait until the end of the competition, if you participate in the first race then you will be able to go and participate in your next competition after a short time. On the other hand, if you participate in the fourth race then you will be stuck for a long amount of time. It’s the same competition with the same reward, but some harm is done to your time.

“Another important point is that any students who have club activities or have had club activities that pertain to the event in question even once, then they cannot participate in it. For Hirata, soccer, or for Sudou, registration towards basketball-related events will not be acknowledged.”

Students who participate in clubs are not simply advantaged. Instead they are held back.

Indeed, there are no students who can win against people like Yousuke or Sudou in their own games. Confrontations with those who have club experience should be avoided.

If Sudou did soccer and Yousuke did basketball, other students would have enough of a chance to win.

Those who devoted themselves to their club in middle school but weren’t able to choose it in highschool. Though not many, there are students like that. They could have some advantage.

“This is like, movie house reservations.”

The words Sudou muttered as he diligently listened to the explanation hit the nail on the head.

“Indeed, you can say that the system is similar. It’s built to reflect who participates in what event and when they do so in real time.”

“Which means that there will be people who cancel because they don’t wanna fight me?”

Sudou exhaled through his nose, linked his arms and muttered pridefully.

“That’s right. But then those students will hit the wall on their third cancellation sooner or later.”

The people who will participate in a competition depend on time constraints. In order to make a schedule, people will want to pin down the competitions that they would be good at as soon as possible. But if they pin them down quickly, they risk going against a strong foe. But if they can only run for a set number of times, they will hesitate on even making the reservation in the first place. There will also be competition in searching and containing oneself.

It’s something like a confrontation on the internet before the sports festival begins.

“If students are tied for the individual rewards, the private points will be split between them and they will no longer be able to get a class transfer ticket.”

On the off chance that students conspire with each other so that they both get the most amount of points in the hopes that they will both get a large amount of private points, the system will crumble. This is probably to prevent that.

Anyway, if you work hard and get all the rewards for yourself in the form of class points or a class exchange ticket.

Rewards that are exactly fitting for your ability.

Even if you don’t intend to transfer classes, 2,000,000 private points can be used in many ways. One could even save it until 20,000,000 points, the guaranteed ticket to A-Class.

On the other hand, students who aren’t confident in their physical abilities should be forced to only five events as much as possible. If they participate in a sixth event or more without winning then they lose a point. That will be a big disadvantage compared to other classes. But that also depends on the way you fight. Chabashira-sensei finished her explanation and left this place. The classroom was thrown into disarray right away like boiling water.

“Alright Suzune, let’s have a meeting ASAP!”

First was Sudou, who said with a loud voice. After listening to the rules his eagerness abruptly spiked.

Naturally, Yousuke also stood up and started going to Horikita. This was the same as always.

But Suzune was being looked at coldly by some students.

Was it okay to leave it to Horikita? Should we let Horikita be the center? Such doubts swirled.

“Firstly, before we discuss the sports festival, I have one thing I should declare.”

She moved before others could, standing from her seat and turning around so that everyone could see her face.

“In the special exam last week, I scrapped the promise I made with everyone and forced us to not expel Kushida-san. I would first like to apologize for that.”

Horikita said and bowed her head. But when she raised it again, strong will was contained in her eyes.

“But I believe that I made the right choice in effect. She can add to the power of the class.”

“I don’t think so.”

The first one to deny Horikita’s words was Shinohara. One of the people who was hurt from Kushida’s exposure.

“Now that we know what kind of person Kushida-san is, nobody trusts her. Right now, nobody has talked about Kushida-san to the other classes, but isn’t that just a matter of time?”

Whether she liked or disliked Kushida, Shinohara put that aside for now and cut straight into an important element that must be considered.

Do not change Kushida’s status as a classmate. If we were to proceed with that premise then the inconvenient 『truth』 should not be leaked.

That Kushida’s heart was black, and that she held harmful feelings. To go around talking about this to other classes would be equivalent to tightening the noose around our own necks.

It would be straightforward and beneficial to keep quiet, but actually doing that will be more difficult than expected.

In particular, Shinohara currently has pain in her eyes towards Kushida as she protests.

It would be no wonder if she blew up already, but it seemed that she was keeping it in right now.

She didn’t seem to understand the benefits. In that case, it would be natural for a smart person who does understand like Yousuke to encourage her to keep her mouth shut.

But it’s unclear how long this will last.

When the doubts and unease concerning Kushida reach their limit, it will all burst.

“Hey Horikita-san. Are you really saying that it was right to set Kushida-san aside? Answer me.”

Horikita was listening to Shinohara with only her face turned. Someone got impatient and hurried her up.

“That’s not to answer at this moment. That applies to me, Shinohara-san, and all our classmates. She must show her presence in our remaining time at school.”

“What’s with that? I want an answer now. No matter how you think about it, Kushida-san will be a hindrance for our class.”

“I certainly don’t know if the unanimity special exam has hurt you. I don’t know if it hurt Wang-san or Hasebe-san who is absent right now. But there’s no erasing the fact that Kushida-san has contributed to this class for the past year and a half. Or are you confident that you could have left better results than she did?”

Even if a big problem sprung up, that doesn’t erase the achievements made in the past.

She brought the class together, cared for their emotions, and raised the standard for our academic and physical ability. Those are her contributions.

At the very least, it’s true that Shinohara hasn’t left better results than she has.

“There’s no helping that you don’t look favorably on what I did, or on how Kushida-san kept insisting on having someone expelled. But even if we had her expelled like that, can you tell me that it was the right choice? Would you be unaffected when the class average drops and we lose our special exams?”

“I mean… we wouldn’t know unless we try.”

“That’s right. Then you won’t understand what I’m trying to do until we try.”

The thing they had in common was that either choice lead to an uncertain future.

It wasn’t easy for Shinohara to talk Horikita down with her ability.

“Can I have a word?”

While Horikita and Shinohara were glaring at each other, Yousuke raised his hand and stood up.

“Something’s been on my mind. If we’re to maximize Kushida-san’s skill, then we have to keep her secret within the class. So I want to ask everyone in the class to keep quiet.”

“That’s true. If no one had given those instructions behind the scenes, it should have been leaked by now.”

It seemed that Horikita held her doubts about how rumors about Kushida weren’t circulating even now, on monday.

“But you didn’t ask for us to keep quiet. Why not?”

“It’s because any sort of gag order on those who want to bring her down is meaningless. It’s just a matter of time.”

This is where the students decide what to do. Give themselves to their emotions and let everyone know about Kushida to get revenge or keep it a secret for the sake of the class.

“I wouldn’t have talked about it even if Hirata-kun hadn’t asked me. We had an opportunity to gather during the weekend. Like, we talked about how nothing good would happen even if we leaked this. But of course if I were to say that I think nothing of Kushida-san right now I would be lying.”

As expected of Matsushita. She’s sharp. Though she was one of the ones affected by Kushida’s exposure, she looked past herself and understood the demerits.

If she exposed me then I would expose her back. The only thing you would gain from that is a second of satisfaction.

“I’ll definitely bring her back. If I cannot do that… I will accept any responsibility.”

Take responsibility. Even the students who bared their fangs with those strong words sounded their throats and gulped.

Even Shinohara.

“…Will you really take responsibility?”

“I intended to ever since I chose to set Kushida-san aside. If it comes to it, you can all judge me.”

Akito and Keisei stared at her silently.

It wasn’t hard to imagine how they felt as they listened to her.

Anyway, Horikita was finished with her willful piece and free time came.

Horikita’s eyes looked not at me but at a certain someone. That person stared back at her, and Horikita finally left the room. At that time, Kouenji stood up from his seat which was side-by-side to a vacant chair and left the classroom in the same manner.

I got curious, so I opened the door just a little bit to check on them.

“You acted as if you had something to discuss with me. What could it be?”

“I wanna check on something for the sports festival.”

“Fufu. There is no need for me to cooperate… I am not mistaken in recognizing that, yes?”

“Of course not. I just wanted to see your intentions. Could you tell me that much?”

Should she consider Kouenji’s activities or not. Depending on that, the plan changes.

After being asked, Kouenji grinned broadly and put his hand on Horikita’s shoulder.

Perhaps because it annoyed her, she tried to brush it off, but Kouenji’s hand did not even twitch.

“Looks like you’re a very lucky~ girl.”

Because his hand stayed at her shoulder, she seemed irritated even as she asked what his meaning was.

“Does that mean you’re willing?”

“I was able to save from the uninhabited island exam and the treasure hunt, but I use a relatively large amount of money at this time period. And I don’t have a reason not to participate.”

Kouenji showed overwhelming power at the uninhabited island exam and supposedly never again, but if there is a test where individuals can gain vast amounts of money then it seems like he’ll feel up to it.

For Horikita this was a sudden windfall. If she could save even one more point then there was nothing to complain about. Not to mention that if it were Kouenji, then he would likely gather ten or twenty points easily.

He’s probably just interested in the rewards this time.

Horikita seemed to hesitate on that for a second, but she stepped forward.

“If you get the right to transfer classes… what will you do?”

Kouenji was indubitably a problem child – no, a free man within our year.

If he decides that he wants to do it, he wouldn’t hesitate in leaving this class. Whether he will help the class or not from here on out is a different matter. At the very least, Horikita doesn’t think that having less people in the class will work to our advantage. And there’s the fact that he would take special exams involving a lot of money like the uninhabited island test and the sports festival seriously. If that happens, then we would have a strong enemy standing in our way.

“There’s no~ problem there. Right now I don’t think that other classes are charming enough for me to throw away my promise with you, Horikita-girl.”

“Right now, huh…”

Which meant that depending on the conditions then it was always possible for him to change classes.

“For today you’re in safe~ty.”

I don’t think that will put her at ease whatsoever. Well, whether or not any class would accept Kouenji is dubious. There are merits, but he also comes with his demerits.

“Alright, I’ll accept that. But if you change your mind on a whim I won’t be able to trust you myself. You will get just enough points to rank highly, you don’t mind if I assume that?”

“That’s okay. Though I won’t join hands with anybody.”

Looked like he was going to stick to the individual contests to gain points. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets first place in all his competitions. Which means there’s a high chance to get the maximum of 55 points.

“Are you really not interested in rising to A-Class?”

Kouenji answered that question with a laugh and returned to the classroom.

“Interested in eavesdropping are you?”

It was as if he peeked at me through the slightly open door, or he knew from the start.

I spoke to Kouenji as he stopped in the background.

“If I said that I wasn’t curious about what you’d do in this sports festival I’d be lying.”

“Shall I write it off as such?”

“Can I ask you something, Kouenji?”

“My heart is currently pounding for the sports festival rewards so I’m in a good mood. I will answer.”

“You and Horikita made a promise. But that’s not absolute. Just as she left Kushida behind, resolved to antagonize the whole class, I think it was possible that you’d get cut off. Do you have any thoughts about that?”

Was he scared about whether or not Horikita would keep her promise? I probed.

Because although he did it under the pretext of getting more private points, he agreed to expelling someone with a strong stance.

“It’s all according to my calculations. If, in the end, the list of expulsion candidates was narrowed down to me, I would have voted in opposition before it came to that. My talk about trusting Horikita-girl was also under that premise.”

“I see. So you don’t fully trust Horikita.”

“Of course I wouldn’t entrust myself to other people. You’re the same, aren’t you?”

“Maybe.”

Though he seemed careless in his freedom, Kouenji had his own calculations when nobody was looking.

And he was protecting his freedom even as he calculated.

No matter how many individual students I analyze and answers I reach, this is the only man I can’t see through.

Price of Victory

After the unanimity special exam, the weekend ended and the following week opened. September 20.

I woke up half past six in the morning, turned on the television and started preparing breakfast.

A new monday had come. My daily life from now on would probably be dramatically different from my life until last week.

I didn’t even need to rigorously reason out why that was.

Roughly divided, there were two main factors casting a shadow on me. Kushida’s display after she got cornered had caused cracks to form in the relationships between my classmates. By overturning the premise that we would have the betrayer, or Kushida expelled, trust in Horikita and people associated with her like myself is wavering.

To expel or not to expel? I had everyone agree to expel someone by promising that only the betrayer would get expelled. Then using the groundwork I had laid, I cornered Kushida, had her confess that she was the betrayer and executed my plan to see her expelled.

Kushida got protection from students with whom she had curried favor and students who wanted to believe in her, but in the end, after her true nature was laid bare and she started exposing others’ secrets, trust in her fell.

I moved one more piece towards her expulsion, but something unexpected happened.

It was Horikita Suzune’s declaration as despite knowing everything, she appealed that Kushida was necessary for the class.

The piece de resistance: she even declared that she would never support Kushida’s expulsion.

In the first place I was the one who promised that only the traitor would be expelled. Horikita never approved of it, but I was still surprised that she would protect Kushida.

With the little time we had left, we could only either let Kushida stay and accept the penalty or expel someone aside from her.

Anyway, as mentioned before, trust largely waned in Horikita, who changed the plan, and me, who set forth someone else to expel.

Those who had their little crushes exposed, and those who were simply hurt.

Those who have started jumping at shadows after hearing gossip from their friends.

Those who lost friends, and those who resented their friends.

There was no time to enumerate all the factors behind the gravity of our class situation.

But the effects of her rampage are nothing to panic about. They were expected from the beginning.

Kushida had amassed trust. This was an unavoidable cost in bringing her down.

This would be easy if it could be taken as a simple demerit.

But I can’t take it as such. I can’t experience this like that. It would be a waste of an opportunity.

We were the only ones who expelled someone from the four classes. Our classmates are deeply hurt. In exchange, we gained class points. No. It’s important to change our perspective regarding the situation.

Don’t write it off as hurt. Look at the future.

We must see that this is an opportunity to strengthen our bonds precisely because they’re hurt.

If we do that, Horikita’s class will be able to get even stronger.

It’s unclear how many students realize this. Anyway, we mustn’t flee from the problem but confront it head-on.

The special examinations for Horikita’s class continue.

The weight of 100 class points, how precious they are. This will be the perfect time to learn that as she looks back on her actions.

Of course, if she is left alone then she might spiral down. Caution is needed.

If this is neglected then the wounds might just open up.

I finished my breakfast and checked my phone with my toothbrush in my other hand.

It seemed that I hadn’t gotten any new messages since I last checked at midnight.

“But still-“

I hadn’t expected this result, and I was still surprised since I hadn’t expected that special exam. Logic, consistency and objectivity. No matter which perspective one took, there was no other choice but to expel Kushida who had insisted on agreeing to expel and plunged the class into chaos.

Her expulsion would have minimized the damage to the class. I judged that they would have been able to shift their emotions towards the sports festival right away.

Therefore in my opinion, Horikita’s choice to 『not expel Kushida』 was not a choice, illogical and a mistake.

Even as I felt that it was an obvious mistake, I helped Horikita and steered the rudder towards Airi’s expulsion. In other words I yielded myself to this obvious failure.

At the very least I would definitely not have done that before I came to this school.

Now why did I accept that?

The student Suzune’s thoughts and feelings towards Kushida were, in some way, stronger than those of others.

Although she wasn’t a close friend to her, you could say that Kushida was indubitably special to Horikita. It was natural for her to want to keep someone who was special to her, but if she let that affect her judgment fundamentally then incongruity is left.

Not to mention that doing this as she consolidates her position as a leader can be seen as a misuse of power.

It’s easy to understand if you take the example of Haruka, Airi’s close friend.

For Haruka, Kushida was evil for insisting on having someone expelled, and she should have been removed. Horikita and I even advanced under the premise that we would remove her.

That was exactly why she became a vote to have someone expelled.

Despite that, Horikita gave Kushida favorable treatment and let her close friend be expelled.

Even if you tell her to give it her all starting next week, she would never be able to agree.

But what must not be forgotten is that Horikita’s choice wasn’t an easy one to make.

Pressed by the difficult choices of that special exam, Horikita clearly brought out her own answer.

Then she stood in the line of fire, bearing the risk on her back, and declared that Kushida would stay.

This in itself is incomprehensible for your run-of-the-mill student. Resolved for others to call her unjust behind her back, Horikita believed that having Kushida stay would be for 『the good of the class.』

“Of course, it’s difficult to say if that was the right choice at this stage.”

Previously, as the unanimity special exam started, the value that Kushida brought to the class was obviously higher than Airi’s. Even after she was exposed some of that value remained, but that large difference shrunk. Adding to that, Kushida herself didn’t say that she would reform, and she’s expected to act uncooperatively with the class from here on out.

In other words, with this situation you could say that there is no proof that Kushida staying will be to the class’ benefit.

Horikita’s plan was wrong in that regard.

That could not be changed. Still, I had one reason for this. This is a blunt way to say it, but it’s because I want to see Horikita’s growth and where she’s headed.

WHat was waiting in the end if the person, Ayanokouji Kiyotaka’s choice was not chosen?

I wanted to see how the class chemistry would react if Kushida remained.

Will we barely overtake A-Class, proving the legitimacy of this choice?

Will the class collapse, showing the error of this choice?

Or will something unexpected change aside from that?

I think that this will likely lead to more bad things at least…

When I opened the OAA on my phone and took a glance at the name registry, Sakura Airi’s name had already been erased. It was as if she had never existed.

I put my phone in my uniform’s right pocket, picked up my bag and headed to my front door.

Aside from ourselves, I was also curious about the moves other classes had made.

Ryuuen and Sakayanagi were set to fight each other in the year-end exam. It wouldn’t have been strange for Ryuuen to steal their class points so they could be named Class A. But what about Sakayanagi? There was no merit in nominating Ryuuen’s class. Did she intend to join hands with Ichinose and crush Ryuuen for good?

Was the 『promise』 between Sakayanagi and Ryuuen involved?

I should pay attention to them, too.

In terms of class points, Horikita’s class got the best result, but…

I left my room at the usual time and headed outside the dormitories.

After going down the elevator, I saw Horikita sitting on a sofa in the lobby, waiting for someone. I had gotten used to seeing that. Though she glanced at me, she didn’t make to stand up at all.

But maybe because nobody was around, after a little while she stood up and approached me.

“Are you waiting for Kushida?”

I spoke before she started. She replied even though she lost her words for a second.

“It’s as you can see. Yes. I went to her room several times over the weekend but…”

It looked like she tried to give emotional care, but she wasn’t even able to contact her.

It’s probably because she was humiliated in a way she had never been before. Perhaps she had been waiting for Kushida to come down since early morning.

What struck my curiosity more than that was how obvious Horikita’s eye bags were.

“Looks like you’ve been very worried about Kushida.”

“Eh? Ah, no. I have been missing sleep, but that’s for another reason. She hasn’t left her room even once. No matter how many times I visited she would always pretend to be out. Truly confined. Still, I’ve been on the lookout to meet her…”

“Confinement… you’ve been waiting by her front door?”

Even if it was just for the weekend, waiting for her from morning to evening is a big deal.

“I repeatedly rang her doorbell and waited. It was still completely quiet, without a single sound.”

It wouldn’t be strange for Kushida to isolate herself in her room with two or three days worth of food, doing nothing but sleeping.

“But shouldn’t you pay more attention to your surroundings? There’s nothing to gain from other classes learning that Kushida-san is shutting herself in.”

She was too concerned to wait for her in the hallway. This was precisely what was called a waste of a break.

An ordinary student would have lost to Horikita’s passion. As expected of Kushida.

Without showing a hint of sympathy, she would weather the storm.

“After what happened the other day I can’t have her acting like she has up to now.”

“Indeed, you have to follow up after choosing to have Kushida stay.”

Horikita showed some determination and nodded, but it wasn’t as if she had no reservations at all.

“Ayanokouji-kun… how was your weekend?”

Of course, she meant the Ayanokouji group. Since Airi was pointed to and expelled, from Horikita’s perspective a problem must be about to erupt.

“I’ve been keeping some contact with Keisei and Akito but that’s it.”

And we didn’t really talk about anything related to Airi.

Rather than not touching on it, perhaps it would be more correct to say that we didn’t know how to touch on it correctly. And there was no evidence that Haruka even saw our messages. It’s not as if she was knowledgeable about how to use the app. But if she didn’t even leave the room then I wouldn’t be surprised if she blocked us instead.

“You haven’t spoken with Hasebe-san yet.”

“Well, no. As I’d expect, Haruka doesn’t want to contact us.”

Horikita showed a guilty face and lowered her head.

She can’t force her to open up through a confrontation.

Rather than trying to repair our relationships, it would be more realistic to leave myself out and let the three of them maintain their relationships with each other.

In short, it would be best to watch over them.

Even if it happens while Haruka holds a grudge against me, it will happen sooner or later.

And if it does, that would be best for the class. If it doesn’t then it’ll have to be addressed. If she continues to resent me, Horikita and the rest, the possibility for Haruka to harm the class because of her own situation won’t be zero.

Her qualifications aren’t necessary for the class, but losing one moderately useful piece would lower the class’ value and of course be a demerit.

Along with her, Akito and Keisei’s potential could decline.

“Even if we talk to her now we wouldn’t be able to get our message across. There’s nothing to do but wait.”

For now, the only thing for certain is that this is nothing to argue about at a place like this.

After checking our state of affairs, Horikita swallowed a breath quietly.

“Because I forced Kushida-san to stay, your group connections have changed.”

I gave Airi the final verdict directly, but that role was brought on by her.

At the very least, that part was our responsibility.

“There’s no need to apologize twice for the same thing. If you think that was correct then that’s enough.”

“But you covered for me. No, that’s not all…”

As if she was organizing her mind, she carefully continued speaking.

“In that situation, even if I had tried to guide Sakura-san to expel herself, Hasebe-san surely wouldn’t have folded until the end. We wouldn’t have been able to avoid reaching the time limit and the penalty.”

It seemed that she was able to cool down on the weekend and look at the situation closely.

How large the burden of declaring an expulsion was, and the difficulty of its execution.

The fight we had within the time limit was tougher than I thought it’d be.

Even with the relief of avoiding the worst case scenario, unease could still be seen within the color of her eyes.

She must be wishing hard that she had had salvation, to have reached an outcome where no one had to be expelled within the time limit.

A world where we still had 39 people. If, even after losing class points, she could have protected her comrades, deepened our bonds and aimed for Class A once again. Horikita herself understands that those are escapist thoughts.

That’s why she’s suppressing them at the bottom of her heart, where they’re about to boil up.

“In that test, it was as if you had seen everything from the start.”

“It’s not like I predicted the future. I just dealt with it under every assumption.”

“That’s amazing. Even if I can imagine something, I can’t see through everything perfectly. How the questions would go, and what kinds of words would lead the other party to move how I want them to. Your calculations were right.”

Little by little she is starting to notice the world I see and think in.

“It’s fine to reflect and analyze, but problems in our class haven’t been settled yet, have they?”

“Y-yes. That’s right…”

“Don’t think that the environment will be the same as it was a few days ago.”

“Of course, I’ve resolved myself. Hasebe-san definitely hates me, Yukimura-kun and Miyake-kun probably do as well. And there are students who don’t agree with how I forced Kushida-san to stay.”

Resolve, she said, but it’s still hard to say if she understands the true meaning.

How long will it stay quiet with the changes brought on by her decision?

I wouldn’t mind if it was a simple advantage, but this time it’s just about the exact opposite. A disadvantage.

She’s probably not going to be seen as a commendable person who gave us class points.

“Go to school already.”

Horikita is currently dedicating all she has to dealing with Kushida, so talking with her for too long here would be meaningless.

“It wouldn’t do us good to be conspicuous.”

Students in Horikita’s class aren’t the only ones who live in this dorm.

People from Sakayanagi and Ryuuen’s classes who should be called enemies also live here.

I don’t think we can put a lid on Kushida’s true nature, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a need to show any openings.

Our class certainly gained many points.

Whether we will be able to face the price for that skillfully will depend on the students from now on.

But, before that-.

What’s to be done about all the problems from her decision that are already in sight?

Akito Miyake’s Monologue

I’ve never once thought that I was special.

Nothing especially good, nor any particular flaws. An average person.

I’ve just been living until now doing what I felt like doing out of some force of habit.

I sometimes did bad things, and I’ve also done somewhat good things.

I’m neither a saint nor a scoundrel. If you were to ask me to evaluate myself then I’d answer something like that.

Ever since I was born, I’ve been that unremarkable guy.

That was obvious ever since high school.

Even the reason I started archery was only because I saw it on the TV and decided to do it to kill time.

Letting myself go with the flow, living my life normally.

I didn’t concern myself with significant things. I lived my daily life without going too hot or too cold.

It might have been boring, but I thought it was fun, so I kept doing it.

The bad thing about that was, I never made any friends who acted like friends in highschool.

I wasn’t really lonely… then by chance, I made friends.

Keisei, Kiyotaka, Haruka, Airi.

Including me we were five people, but that small group was strangely comforting.

I’ll probably spend the rest of my highschool life relaxing with these guys, I thought.

Even if the surroundings changed I was still me. I thought that would never change.

Despite my expectations, something big changed.

Falling in love with someone.

I’ve thought of others as cute or beautiful until now, but I’d never fallen in love before.

When did it happen?

When did I start staring at Haruka’s face from the side?

I gained conviction in the unanimity special exam, when Haruka was about to get expelled.

I could no longer stay cold.

I prioritized my feelings instead of reason.

She had to be protected, even if it meant throwing away Airi, one of our group members who was just as loved.

I don’t know if these feelings can be forgiven or not.

After comparing them, I inevitably prioritized the one I wanted to protect.

“Will you go and take revenge with me?”

That whisper pulled me back to the present. Her eyes, looking at me, were no different than usual.

Confident, direct, and sparkling in a dangerous color.

But I didn’t have a shred of hesitation. My resolve left no room for it.

I didn’t answer with my voice. No, I couldn’t.

That revenge would definitely endanger many of our classmates and our friends.

As if she saw me thinking that, she smiled, turned her back on me and walked on her own.

Before I surely would have seen her off indifferently.

That would be the correct thing to do.

Yes, if I let her walk away, how much easier would it be?

I didn’t know that falling in love was this troublesome and this serious.

I…

After this, no matter how many people despise me…

My emotions won’t let me allow this girl to walk on her own.

Today, as the sports festival ends, I hardened my non-existent resolve.
